Hi
I am currently 6+3 and suffering with the dreaded MS. Have so far not been sick but feel so very nauseas all day and night.
Dr has today prescribed metaclopromide on the instruction that I only take them when REALLY desperate. Daft thing to say to somebody suffering MS whilst trying to keep up a full time job (they don't yet know either), be a Wife and Mother to 6yr twins DS's.
Isuppose my question is would you / have you resorted to this medication in early pregnancy? Surely he wouldnt have prescribed it if it was really unsafe?
Part of me thinks he may just have been a a cautious Dr as he also advised against 2 previous Dr's in the practise and advised me to stop taking my ant-depressants immediately. I had previously been advised (even after a MC and CP) not to stop as they could be more harmful.
Oh so confused!! Any experiences, advice or opinions would be gratefully received.
X

Having been in similar circumstances to you, you have to weigh up what would be better for you to do.
The thing is with drugs and pregnancy is it is unethical to do controlled studies on pregnant women taking these drugs in case it causes any problems. The fact is that women do take these medications when pregnant as they have no choice and there have been no reported unwanted effects on baby. For it to be considered completely safe trials in a controlled environment are necessary.

I had hyperemesis early on and started on stemetil then metoclopramide then cyclizine, none worked. Then I was admitted to hospital where I was started on ondanstetron which took the edge off taken with cyclizine three times a day but I was still vomiting several times a day.
My hyperemesis eventually tailed off after week 20 but still took the meds to keep the nausea at bay.
In my case I had no choice. I was already slim but lost nearly two stone, vomited daily for 10 weeks, and most of the little I could eat or drink I threw up. Had two hospital admissions for ketostis and dehydration although I think it should have been more admissions but I moved in with my parents so they could care for me.
As for the anti depressants, I was on 40mg of citalopram. With the HG I was unable to take the tablets anyway, and was advised I could take it but later in the pregnancy the baby may be born and suffer withdrawals.
I decided to come off it completely but a few weeks ago felt very low, anxious, etc. I went back to the GP and was started back on 20mg then I've weaned to 10mg and its seemed to help my mood quite well.
I'm 35 weeks pregnant now and my aim is later on nearer the due date is to take 10mg on alternate days to minimise as much as I can the baby having withdrawal symptoms.
In an ideal world I would not be taking any medications, but if I didn't me and the baby would be a lot worse off.
Hope this helps. Xxx

Ps. I don't know what type of anti depressant you are on but I know you should never just stop taking it, you need to wean down. Also I was placed under consultant care because I was on anti depressants and they can advise you further.

I had hyperemesis and took metaclopramide 3 times a day throughout the pregnancy. It was prescribed as a safe medicine for pregnant women.

I was really desperate as I lost a stone (already v slim) and was dehydrated and ill to the point of passing out.

I would not have taken it unless I had hyperemesis i.e. not for routine morning sickness.

It's an individual decision... I'm still carrying around a 'delayed script' from when I was about 7/40 that I didn't end up cashing.

Although I was vomitting daily (bouts morning and evening) I decided against because I wasn't loosing weight (although not gaining either!) & didn't feel generally dehydrated as I had a window of time each day where I kept things down.

The night shifts on-call weren't much fun though & I suspect my colleagues probably wanted to run up behind me & jab me with IM antiemetics because I did take some time off with it.
