How am I going to deal with the first year when the smell of milk makes me hurl?

I have always had an aversion to milk. I can deal with just enough to make my cereal damp and a splash in my coffee but the smell and sight of milk that is warm, sour, coagulated etc. just makes me want to throw up.

Everyone goes on about the gorgeous milky smell of babies and I'm just thinking "oh no, how am I going to not wretch over my baby on a daily basis?"

I suppose nobody is that keen on the smell of shit either and there will be plenty of that to contend with, but probably not in such a constant all surrounding sort of way.

Anyone else had this issue and got any tips?

I really don't like milk either, I have the driest Wheatabix known to man! Although sounds like not as severe an aversion.

Baby milk is different somehow. Breast milk smells sweet, and formula is different again (although DS's lacto-free stuff smelt hideous!).

The bigger test comes later - I am trying to move DD onto having her morning [cows] milk in a sippy cup rather than a bottle, which meant I have to taste it rather than pour a bit on my arm to test for temperature. Envy

Clothes peg?

I hate bananas. The smell of them makes me want to vomit. I managed to give them to my son who loves them and tries to feed them to me "no sweetie, that's DS's nana, not mummy's"
As for the milky smell - i don't remember any smell except the potato smell of soya which he drinks now at age 2.
I do rememeber him looking all milk drunk and sleepy after a feed which was lovely.
I have found as a parent i can stomach gross stuff my kid does way more than i can for other children.
Also, i doubt you'll be giving your child off milk. If you do find yourself heaving when you open it, you'll know it's not right.

I'm with you, OP. I have what is basically a milk phobia.

I never noticed my children smelling of milk. Maybe that's because I don't associate something smelling of milk to be a lovely smell.

Don't worry. Your baby will smell gorgeous to you.

I went right off milk in my first pregnancy and it has persisted since, like you I can have a tiny splash with tea or cereal, but anything more than that turns my stomach - but I second TwelveLeggedWalk, baby milk (breast or formula) doesn't smell like cows milk at all, and nor do babies, they just smell luuuuurvely and soft

I am exactly the same. It was one of the first things I thought of when deciding to breastfeed because I knew I couldn't stomach preparing bottles of milk.

I was fine. The first time I dealt with milky sick I was a bit Envy but actually, as others have said, it's somewhat different. I can't explain why, though...

Lightfairy, I didn't mean sour milk to feed the baby. I opened a bag of hand me down clothes the other day and they had a sour milky smell which made me think that the clothes in the laundry, muslins after an hour of being out, my hair, the back of my clothes etc where the baby has spit up, may well give off a whiff of sour milk.

Thanks for the reassuring comments though. It's all an unknown to me so it's just something I needed to ask and get my head around!

Being a parent makes doing all manner of disgusting things your non-parent self cannot imagine doing.
This is a bit different but I have a phobia of butterflies and moths, my skin is crawling and I feel sick just typing the words.
However I walked through the butterfly house at Chester Zoo quickly and without breathing twice with DD because I could tell she was getting scared by my behaviour and I would hate her to feel the way I do.

makes you do not makes doing!
