Hi,
Im 20+4 EDD 01/08.
I need to tell my employer today as I think he is starting to make plans for me.
I am really scared, I know there is nothing he can do but I just wondered if anyone had any advice on how to start the conversation?

Resist the urge to be apologetic! And (beyond the conversation) remember your rights. You're entitled to maternity leave, time off for appointments, modifications to your schedule or responsibilities and sick days. He's not doing you a favour by letting you take them. Having said that, I am sure it will be fine! Congratulations and good luck x

Yes, really agree with not sounding apologetic. Just tell him straight. Good luck!

We have had a change over of manager recently, I only work in a small office, there are only 3 of us. My new manager (the owner of the business) is a real arrangant pig. He takes the mickey out of people who are pregnant that come in the office and says they only got pregnant to claim more housing benefit (I work in a letting agents). I have spoken to his son (my old manager) over the weekend and he said - he knows what he can be like but he thinks he may act different, and these things happen.

I also feel bad because I have left it this late and the other person in my office has booked all her holidays for August, September last week cos she knew that I had to tell him soon and she wanted to get in there first.

I really dont know how to start the conversation :S

I wrote a letter and gave my boss that at the same time I told them. Signed and dated to go in HR records so they couldn't say I hadn't informed them!!
You might find this useful - NCT advice

Ask if he has a minute and could you talk in private. Then just come straight out with it! You're pregnant, you're looking to begin maternity on this date, you'd like to do a risk assessment at his earliest convenience. And that's that! Your colleague's holiday will have no impact on your maternity plans. She may have to reschedule depending on your managers discretion, but you can't help that! Let us know how it goes! It'll be fine.
