Not confident in my MW and panicking about baby's position

Hello. I'm 37 weeks with DC2 and having a panic.

My MW is lovely but not particularly reliable. She's semi-retired so hard to get hold of, has been over and hour late for several appointments (once over two hours late as she 'forgot) and I've had strange advice from her, which was contradicted at the hospital (I'm seeing a consultant every four weeks due to previous PE).

My concern is that I think the baby is transverse. When I lie down I can feel nothing at the top of my bump. I am, however, getting lots of kicks and movement above both my left and right hips and almost round into my back. When I lie on my side it's almost like the baby is pushing against the bed and coming up out of the opposite hip! I've had a few growth scans (but none for three weeks and no more scheduled) and the baby is consistently measuring on the 95th centile but my FH is spot on.

MW has palpated a few times and vaguely said head is down but not engaged (obviously not expected in 2nd pg). I'm not overly confident about this as she is doing home visits (lives on my street) so I'm always hunched up on the sofa when she does this. Plus, my sister had an EMCS for undiagnosed breech, which is in the back of my mind.

I'm aware that transverse lies increase the risk of cord prolapse, so I am concerned I may go into labour before next appointment at consultant (39+4). But then again, my MW has lots more experience than me and maybe I'm talking out of my a**e! What do you think? I'm tempted to rock up at the DAU and ask for a second opinion, but I'm quite happy to accept I'm imagining things!

I would go get a second opinion. You're your baby's only advocate. What's the worse that can happen? They tell you everything's fine?

Best of luck!

I would definitely go to the Assessment Unit- particularly if you have one you can just turn up at. They will be used to people doing this sort of thing- and it does sound as if you have reasons to be concerned. This midwife isn't due to deliver your baby, is she?

Yes, I'd push for a second opinion and possibly a scan. My DD was breech throughout my pregnancy and some MWs were quite sure that her head was actually her bum!

It's tricky and often Mum knows best IME.

seeker no she's not going to deliver the baby. I'm classed as 'high risk' in this pg because of PE last time (despite no problems this time) so I have to go to the nearest hospital (30 mins away) and she only does HBs and works in the MLU.

Phew!

But a bit Hmm that she does home births- do you think you should raise your concerns about her somewhere?

I've spoken to the MWs at the hospital about her as I've had some very strange information from her which (luckily as it's my second pg) I knew was bs. Prime example was that I am 'not allowed to get my BP checked at the hospital', even though my consultant had me going three times a week to get it done! They asked me where I'd heard it and so I told them and they have spoken to her (still doesn't stop her forgetting appointments though).
