Hi guys! This is my first pregnancy and I am only six weeks pregnant but I have a lot of browny coloured blood/discharge and I am quite terrified! The GP said it could be nothing and I should take a pregnancy test again next week. Has anybody had this that could give a little reassurance? Thank you x

Hi, try not to worry too much. Brown discharge is not usually something to worry about as its old blood, so could be from implantation etc... If you get nasty cramping or fresh looking blood contact your walk in centre or EPU. Take care x

I had bleeding at 6 weeks which my MW said could probably be attributed to further implantation and is very common at the 6-8 week stage. Good luck! Smile

Thank you so much guys! Really have put my mind at rest. Thank you xx

Hi, I'm in the same situation as you. I'm 6 weeks with my first and went into panic mode on Thursday when I found brown spots in my underwear. I tried to make an appointment with the doctor but they were all booked up so saw the nurse who said it was common and I shouldn't worry unless it was accompanied by pain or the blood turned red. I felt reassured but when I got home, I went to the loo and when I wiped, the discharge was pink. I tried phoning the EPU who wouldn't even speak to me, said they wouldn't take self referrals even though they said they did on the website. But anyway, that was yesterday and today it has gone back to being brown and only when I wipe rather than being in my underwear. I have now read a lot of comments about this on various sites and it does seem to be quite a common symptom. It's still worrying though especially at this very early stage when you don't even have a midwife you can contact. Fingers crossed for us!

Hey - I had brown/ pinky discharge at around 6 weeks too, was told by doctor (I went to hospital in the end as was away in Canada and freaking out!) that it was pretty normal, old, blood just being "pushed out" as things move and grow down there and around 30% or so of women experience some kind of bleeding during early pregnancy without it being a sign of miscarriage. Don't know how accurate that stat is but reassured me! Anyway it stopped after a few days and baby seemed all healthy at 12 week scan and am 17 weeks now :) I know how scary it is though, but really I think this is quite common. Obviously speak to your doctor again if worried, especially if gets heavier and more red/clots or if you have any pain, but in the absence of this I would try not to tower. Easier said than done of course!

islingtongirl · 16/03/2013 17:31

"Try not to worry" not "tower" - wretched iPad!

I had this on Monday,at 6.5 weeks, my GP send me for a scan at the EPU. Baby was ok but they told me to take it easy for a few days. Seems a bit weird that the GP told you to take another pregnancy test next week, surely he could send you for a scan? can you see a different GP? Keeping my fingers crossed for you. Good luck!

I get this all the time and have had 3 scans just for the bleeding and had swabs and they can't find anything, I'm 22 weeks and panic each time but seems to be normal. Sometimes its brown and sometimes red.

YoungMummie · 16/03/2013 21:16

Thanks for this! I am feeling really positive now :) Mine also turned to pink instead of brown but then back again but no pain! Good luck to us! I genuinely think we will be ok! Health professionals are making me worry more than they should I think xx

And it is strange that he said take another pregnancy test but he said he can't send me for a scan because at six weeks they can't see anything. Is that right??? Xxx

It seems that medical advice is very conflicting. Some GPs say it is nothing to worry about and others send women for scans. I think midwives are the best people to speak to but when it is so early, that's not always possible as I discovered! I've also read that 6 week scans often can't make anything out anyway. One piece of advice that I read on an American site was her doctor had said to drink lots of water to try and flush out all the old blood faster. I've been trying this since yesterday and the brown has definitely gone much paler.

YoungMummie · 17/03/2013 11:29

I have been drinking lots of cranberry juice and mine isn't so brown either it's a dark pinky colour! No pain either just like slight period cramps! X

I don't get GPs when they all give different advice! And I have no way of contact to my MW until my first appointment with her which isn't until 9 and a half weeks!

I had the same thing, I ended up going to get it checked out as I was worried and had a transvaginal scan and everything was fine. I was told based on the colour and consistency it is 'old blood' that you get when your uterus starts to expand, which also gives you those horrible period type pains. If is turns red or a bright colour and is thinner/less creamy, more like a period, then this is more of a concern.

Youngmummie - that isn't strictly right - you can have a transvaginal scan and they can see the start of things - i.e. I saw the heartbeat at 6 weeks, and the little bean shape of the baby. But you can't see much more, and a normal scan would not be able to pick anything up (on your belly). I had all this done in germany, which is really strict on medication, but they do transvaginal scans early on as the norm for some reason. x

YoungMummie · 17/03/2013 14:20

I think I will talk to a different GP then! Thank you very much. I got really worried when I was getting pains but they are nothing major! I have never even heard of that type of scan but I think I will ask if they could ask for one xx

I had an abdo scan with my 2nd at 6+5. I think it depends on the position of the baby, the tilt of your uterus and your weight what they can see.

I had early bleeding with both of my pregnancies and 'common' or not its really worrying. I was referred to epu both times and had early scans.

YoungMummie · 17/03/2013 20:00

Unfortunately it was not good news for me guys but thanks for all your help and good luck xx
