Low lying placenta

Hi all, I'm 28 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. I was told at my 20 week scan that my placenta is low lying and I would need a further scan at 32 weeks to check its position. I'm now starting to get worried because a few people I have spoken to have said that it can lead to a c section if it hasn't moved. Has anyone experienced this and what is the outcome if my scan shows it is still low?

More than 80% move up, so odds are well in your favour. If it hasn't then yes it means an elcs because if the placenta is covering the os (exit route) then you would otherwise haemorrhage and risk your and the baby's life if you had a normal delivery. It is a GOOD thing they found this and it can be managed safely.

Fwiw my placenta was low at 20 week scan, still low at a scan I had at 26 weeks. By 32 weeks it was well out of the way. If I'd needed a section I'd have been really glad they'd spotted it.

Good luck.

Literally just had this happen to me at my scan. Basically if it doesn't move then yes you will have to have a C section if the entire placenta is blocking the cervix opening. Mine has moved I think because I can feel the baby a lot now and couldn't previously. My midwives told me low lying placentas can restrict movement and make it harder to find the heartbeat sometimes too. See what happens at your later scan. I want to avoid a c section if I can because I've never had one and only have had normal natural births with my previous two.

I had this with DS1. It moved out of the way so didn't cause any problems. I almost felt a little sad this time when they said it was right at the top. I was hoping to get an extra chance to see DS2 again before he's born! Blush I did have a growth scan last time so if this one's small too I might get to see him! Not looking likely though - am 28 weeks & measuring right on target!

Just try to see it as a bonus opportunity to see your baby! It's highly likely to have moved. Smile

Thanks everyone. Just really don't want to have a c section cos I didn't with my 1st and I feel it won't be the same as giving birth naturally but I can feel the baby moving a lot now so maybe it has moved

I had this, mine was completely blocking the exit at 20 weeks. Apparently something like 90% move so really don't worry. Mine had moved well away at 34 weeks and I am currently on track for a homebirth.
