Hi,

1st timer so don't have a clue! Blush What size nappies should I get and how many of each? Do I take nappies with me to the hospital for the baby? If so, how many?

Thanks!

Of course I'm talking about disposable nappies! :)

lots and lots! i would get a pack of newborn and a pack of the next ize up in case you have a biggun. yes take the pack of newborns into hospital with you.

Agree with gymboy above. I think I did something foolish like buying only one packet of nappies thinking it would last a week (!) lots and lots is the way to go and if not you can always force visitors to pick up a packet on the way over to visit you at home (like we did with both nappies and babygrows- we only bought 5 and they were enormous- clearly underprepared for it all!!)
Good luck OP.

I'm a second time mum. Have bought 4 packs of size 1 (of the 26 per pack ish variety). I got through about 12-14 nappies per day with DS to begin with. Taking a whole pack in with me to hospital, despite expecting only a short stay.

Don't get too many though as the brands all fit a bit differently and you don't know what will suit your baby best yet. DS was a tiddler at 6lb 10 and he was in size 1 for weeks. Getting some size 2 in will never be wasted, baby will need them eventually, so definitely worth having a pack at least in case you have a whopper!

i would agree with HP. No more than 4 packs of size 1. this covers the 4-11 pound size range. Size 2 covers 6-13 pounds so actually most babies could go straight into size 2 but on average a week or two in size one is better. If you have a tiddler you can just buy another load of size 1 until the 2s fit better. We used size 2 from about 10 days or so with our 8lb baby.

Thank you ladies! Which brand would you recommend?

I always liked pampers but tesco own were great with ds2 but that was 3 years ago so they could have changed. I've bought some naty ones to try this time, have you joined the baby clubs such as boots and tesco, sometimes you get money off so makes it worth trying a few.

With DS I started with pampers (newborn) and tried a few others, including tescos own. Finally at size 3 moved on to nature babycare (now called Naty). These are lovely nappies, no bleach or nasty chemicals, v absorbant, kind on DSs sensitive skin and biodegradable, but they are a bit more expensive.

This time, I've gone for naty from the start.

Tbh my advice would be to go with whichever is on offer when you go to the shops, but don't get Huggies as they're going out of production and if you like them it could be frustrating to not be able to get any more. You'll go through a few different types before you settle on what suits your baby.

The hospital I went to provided nappies, so I didn't take any, hadn't bought any before hand luckily as DS was 9lb 9 oz so started in the size 2 nappies, sent hubby out to buy them after ds was born. check what you hospital recommends. We also tried 1 box of lots of brands before settling on pampers.

I was so unprepared for being a new mum I had to ask a midwife to show me how to change a nappy, but muddled through. I found that Te big supermarkets had nappies on sale alternative weeks so just shopped smart for them, have never run out, good luck
