Orange juice and lucozade seemed to take the edge off a bit for me, or at least make the sick taste a bit nicer Grin I had to keep a glass of something sweet by the bed, so I could neck it before I got up and avoid twenty minutes of choking up awful yellow bile.

Other than that, dry carby foods like others suggested - crackers, toast, dry cereal, crisps etc. The only problem with foods like that is that, when they don't work and you throw up anyway, they have a tendency to scratch your throat to buggery on the way back up.

At about twelve weeks I started to crave red meat, and found that steak pretty much cured me for a few hours. Maybe anaemia has something to do with it?

I'm still suffering and these are my tips:

Avoid

  • Spicy food
  • Or food like onions/garlic which leave a lasting taste

Try

  • Orange juice and lemonade
  • Lime cordial and lemonade
  • Strong Ribena
  • Orange Lucozade
(but remember to brush your teeth if you drink all these!)
  • Cornflakes for breakfast (I've just managed porridge this morning too!)
  • Toast
  • Heinz tomato soup (with toast)
  • Ham salad or cheese and tomato sandwiches
  • Eat little and often e.g. if you're having a sandwich, have one have at 12pm, then the other at 1pm...
  • If you have a craving e.g. salt and vinegar crisps (like I did, sat in my car at the petrol pump, hoovering them up with no shame!) just do it, but don't gorge. Just have enough to satisfy the craving
  • Grapes (the only fruit I can stomach at the moment!) with cubes of cheddar!
  • My DH makes amazing homemade pizzas and they've been great for getting some more veg in me! The crust is plain and I'm happy to eat tomato, then I just have what I can stomach on top - have found that mushrooms, tomato, ham and pineapple and a little cheese works well

Some of the above, I just had to force myself to eat them. I find that the thought of eating is worse than the act itself so getting my DH to cook something that I don't see until I'm eating it also helps.

But agree that everyone's different - I can't stomach anything sweet (unless they're also bitter/sour like the drinks above) but others only want chocolate.

Msbluesky32 · 13/03/2013 11:40

I'm with nyunya eat as often as you can as an empty stomach is by far the worst thing for it.

You might panic that you'll put on tonnes of weight - chances are you might a bit at first - i put on half a stone in the first trimester...but I'm 36 weeks now and can barely eat because there is no room left and i feel full really quickly. The overall effect has been I put on weight quite quickly but was weighed yesterday and have only gained 10lbs since my first booking appointment (so about a stone in total). Baby is still growing really well though - I guess I'm just not getting the benefits of it! Smile

pugoff · 13/03/2013 17:54

Greggs sausage, bean & cheese melt
Cyclizine

Not nec in that order.

RainbowsFriend · 13/03/2013 18:11

Well a greasy cheese and onion pasty hit the spot this morning.... then came back up 4 hours later. Well at least that was 4 hours vomit free! Grin

Teaandflapjacks · 13/03/2013 19:02

Salt and vinegar crisps -partic pringles. I got through tons of them - helped get rid of that foul taste I had that no amount of mouthwash/scrubbing tongue and teeth would shift! I have read from other ladies before this helped them too. I found plain water awful actually - i like very cold ribena quite diluted, or lime cordial with fizzy water also good. i found meat made me worse, and contrary to the other people, anything too greasy was a no no. I did find cornflakes with full fat milk ok weirdly, and sandwiches made of a small amount of cheese, pickle or tomatoes, with crust cuts off like a child into tiny triangles (!) ok, and plain pasta, sometime with some cheese sprinkled on it. Nothing too rich - think what you would feed a toddler, and that was what worked for me! Oh and sweets - I guess for sugar - anything your body can quickly get energy from in case your sick is what I think your body is doing!

honey86 · 14/03/2013 00:16

mmm the salt n vinegar chipsticks sound tempting actually.... i think slush puppies too x

sip cold milk every ten minutes

sniff newspapers

Empress77 · 14/03/2013 09:38

o yes the salt and vinegar chipsticks and squares are amazing.

Teaandflapjacks · 14/03/2013 09:41

we can't get them in germany - only S&V pringles. I look forward to stuffing my face with them when I do my last UK trip before the baby comes at easter!! S&V discos and squares - 1 pack in each hand. num num.

BB01 · 14/03/2013 13:15

In desperation I started taking ginger capsules and wearing travel bands. 3 days later, the worst of the nausea had gone. Could have been pure coincidence though!

honey86 · 15/03/2013 09:51

never heard of sniffing newspapers before Grin

Fakebook · 15/03/2013 09:58

Hot sweet tea and those heart/triangle/rectangle cheesey biscuity things.

Mandytm · 15/03/2013 10:09

At 10 weeks I was throwing up about half of what I ate. I saw my doctor and she gave me something that 100% stopped the vomiting and 90% stopped the nausea.

So see your doctor! I can't stand the old fashioned view that women should just get on with it.

I was at a grey and vomit covered, almost Exorcist-like point, where if I heard someone suggest ginger biscuits or dry crackers I may have throttled them. Very little helped except medication.

The only other things that had an effect on the nausea was getting plenty of sleep and also keeping something protein based in my stomach at all times.

As horrible as it was, it passed at 15 weeks and my energy levels returned to normal.

knittingirl · 15/03/2013 12:29

Lots and lots of sleep made a big difference for me (10-12 hours a night). Also, eating constantly - crackers were really good to nibble on.

abbyfromoz · 15/03/2013 12:38

I really sympathise. i threw up from week 6 (i remember the day) to week 35.... At the beginning about 10 times a day and by the end had it down to once a day. I saw the doc and they gave me... Wait for it... Motion sickness over the counter drugs... Needless to say they did nothing whatsoever and i could have screamed (had i the energy to do so)... I know this sounds unreasonable but when i saw the treatment the D of C got for chronic morning sickness my blood boiled.. Happy she got adequate care but unimpressed with the attitude i received from GP. i was fobbed off when i sought help in desperation...
My tip to you- coping...
Doggy bags in handbag+ nappy wipes+ hand sanitizer+ water
Eat a banana or wheetbix or something you find easier to throw back up- rice is not one of these things!
I know its the last thing you will want but to try and keep up energy i drank a lot of freshly squeezed juice...

I really hope and pray it goes away quickly but if it's any consolation it's a sign of a healthy pregnancy. After a previous mc i found this very reassuring.

All the best and congrats xx

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 15/03/2013 12:46

My mum recommended sparkling water and while it did not take it away completely, it definitely made me feel lots better even if just for a short while.

Fairydogmother · 15/03/2013 12:56

I'm drinking fizzy water and bitter lemon - both seem to help that rotten taste in my mouth.

Loving chocolate and bread with cheese too as it seems to stop the waves of nausea. Melon is also good.

But I never take off my seaband bracelets and they really do seem to help!

Cavort · 15/03/2013 13:21

Any ice-cold drink eased it for me. Literally with ice from the bottom to the top of the glass.

CourgetteSmuggler · 15/03/2013 13:26

Mine was horrendous, also ended up in A&E after being sick 7-10 times per day from week 6-24! I lost 1.5 Stone which came straight back on but found that the Twinnings herbal teas were amazing, they smell much nicer than they taste and also keeping yourself busy. The more you think about feeling sick the worse it gets!

MrsSpagBol · 15/03/2013 13:44

Salty crisps
Ginger ale
Citrus fruit
Bananas
Stodge like mac cheese, croissants etc
Sleep
Eat /sleep BEFORE you feel like death
Don't run around like a headless chicken on an empty stomach

NO mints

MrsSpagBol · 15/03/2013 13:45

oh and ginger capsules from Boots saved my life. I was literally puking ALL the time and I am a chef. You can see how this would NOT work.

sleepingsatellite · 15/03/2013 13:58

Teeny tiny sips of water, keep a bottle with you all day.

Motion sickness bands, wear all the time!

Dont live for the magic 12 week date! I did with DS1 and was devastated when I didn't get better, I got much worse! (sorry) Take one day at a time.

The most important one for me, but only really do-able if you have understanding bosses and no children, is rest, rest and more rest!

Hope it passes quickly for you Smile

BabyOuch · 15/03/2013 14:14

Hi I am 16+1 and the sickness is starting to subside a little. I found smells, like cigarettes, coffee etc all turned my stomach too. I have been wretching in work all times of the day. I found carbs and little and often, toast, crumpets etc.

Molehillmountain · 15/03/2013 15:06

Sucking boiled sweets helped. My teeth seem unscathed!
