Have just been told that my baby (due early march) is def breach presentation. They want to try and turn at 36 weeks if he/she hasn't moved by themselves (although its a big baby so they don't think he/she will move on their own). Has any one had experience of having a breach baby turned?

The midwife did some prodding when ds was breech but he did turn all on his own, infact I'm not convinced he was breech I just think that my midwife didn't like me very much and wanted to make me very uncomfortable, she had real difficulty in deciding if she could feel the head or his bum....... comes to something when the midwife doesn't know which end is which!

Yep, my DD turned at about 36 weeks to head down. Heard it can be a little uncomfortable having it turned. Mears would be the best (and most qualified!) to say what's involved.

ds was breech and I had an attempted ECV. Here ,here and here are some of the previous threads on breech babies. Sorry if you've already read them - I don't want to keep droning on about my very unexciting time!

Have seen it done a number of times now. Baby doesn't alwyas stay there and some refuse to go round!
It shouldn't be painful although may be uncomforatble. Worth a go to avoid unnecessary C/S if possible.

Get on your hands and knees A friend's large baby turned at 37 weeks (very uncomfortable I believe!) after she spent a lot of time like this.

eddm · 21/01/2004 19:14

Have you had a scan? I think Jenie's right ? hospital staff were convinced my ds was breech but couldn't tell difference between head and bum. GP thought they were being ridiculous and had already said head was engaged ? checked again to reassure me and said, yep, it's engaged. Guess who was right? Even if your baby is breach at this stage there's still time for him/her to turn in the next six weeks or so. Good luck! (oh and my mother tells me midwives and docs used to know how to deliver breach babies in her day - although I've already complained about her on another thread today so not sure I can hold her up as fount of all wisdom on this )

I watched my sister having hers turned by an experienced consultant, at about 35 weeks. It was quite quick and looked easy, only took a few minutes tho she said it was quite painful. The baby stayed in the head down position then and she went on to have a vaginal birth.

Spikeycat has your baby turned. Mine is also breach. I heard that acupuncture can work. Anyone heard of that ?

motherinferior · 28/01/2004 21:37

Yes, acupuncture can help; more specifically a technique called moxa, which is little burning sticks (they don't hurt - much - I have moxa as part of my regular acupuncture). The trained acupuncturist midwives at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth report that they have a 20 per cent improvement rate on the number of babies who would have turned 'naturally' at that point IYSWIM. You'll need a trained acupuncturist - you can get a list of accredited ones in your area from the British Acupuncture Society (I think it's called, or something very similar)very nice people, haven't got the URL here but they'll send you a list of people in your area, and then just ring round and talk to someone you trust.

HTH? Good luck!

Hi there - had an attempted CVS with DD at about 37 weeks (I think) and found it an awful experience. She did move around bit and then swung back to breech. Was a fair size (9lb 9oz) thou so not sure how much that has to do with it. I swore I would never do it again - sorry not quite sure if that what you want/need to hear.

HTH and good luck with what you choose.

Rhubarb · 29/01/2004 16:11

My sister had a CVS at 38 weeks and found it very easy. She said it wasn't uncomfortable at all and the baby turned straight away. Mind you, the consultant did say to her that not everyone has it so easy! My m-i-l also had this procedure and found it painless too. So it all depends. Hope your baby manages to turn!
