I am very newly pregnant and feel ok, exhausted and constant back ache but no nauseau so far.
however, im having terrible headaches - is this comman in 1st trimester or is caffeine withdrawl as ive cut out all coffee and tea and hubbie wont let me drink even the decaf stuff til 1st trimester over?

I havent managed to do much exercise as im just wrecked, home from office, cook dinner and im practically asleep on the sofa by 9 plus waking at 3am to pee is draining me!

Are headaches normal ?

Congratulations!
I'd say it's the caffeine withdrawal - its fine to have a coffee! If you google it you'll find the recommended amounts. Don't think I could survive without a daily coffee. I try and limit myself to 2 coffees a day. Don't forget it's in stuff like chocolate too

I had awful headaches almost every day in the first trimester. I don't think it's necessarily caffeine withdrawal - I don't like tea or coffee so never ever drank them before getting pg. So I guess it could be one of those annoying pregnancy things?

I definitely had caffeine withdrawal headaches, I was never had a big intake of caffeine, but had 3 days of awful headaches early on and realised it was caffeine withdrawal after I had a can of cola and the headache was gone within 30 minutes.

As far as I am aware too much caffeine leads to decreased birth weight, I had roughly the limit (200mg each day) and still had a 9lb 9 oz baby! I would stick to the limits and enjoy coffee, tea, chocolate etc as I found the first trimester pretty grim.

The tiredness does clear up ! I was going to bed at 6 this time, (my toddlers bed time) and sleeping through, last time (when I was working full time) I was often asleep by 5! (Worked 7 till 4).

Try some caffeine and see if the headaches go away, otherwise like previous poster said its probably just one of those pregnancy things! If they do continue mention them to your midwife (when you meet them) as it could be relate to blood pressure too.

Good luck!

Your husband won't "let" you?!? Pft.

I'm 9 weeks and my migraines have come back with a vengeance. I'd pretty much cut right down on caffeine whilst ttc and immediately switched to decaf when got the BFP.

I can't take anything other than paracetamol which does nothing for me anyway when I have a migraine so the midwives have advised me to have some caffeine to help with the migraine and its worked.

If I'm feeling ok I don't have any but I know the early signs and a cup of tea and a biscuit really help.

On one hand its nice your DH is keen for you to be as good as you can for baby. On the other hand what's best for baby is a mum who is relaxed and comfortable.

Congratulations on your news!

make sure you're hydrated by drinking water. I made that mistake in the first few weeks and felt so bad with headaches but since trying to drink more they are rare.

I've found I need to drink loads of water or I get headaches every day, and I mean loads like constantly sipping water and I'm nearly 22 weeks.

I would just have a cup or upto the limit if you're suffering.

craftycottontail · 11/03/2013 13:21

I agree with drinking loads too, I got incredibly thirsty in the first trimester.

Also had a lot of sinus pain/headaches too, maybe it's that? I didn't necessarily have a blocked nose or anything, just felt congested in my head which is apparently normal during pregnancy. Midwife suggested a saline nasal spray which helped a little, but it cleared up early in the 2nd trimester.

smallsmith · 11/03/2013 17:34

Congratulations! It could be a bit of both - I had really bad headaches in the few couple of weeks too, as I also cut out all caffeine initally, but I'm drinking a couple of cups of tea a day again now, and feel much better for it!

I think if you fancy a cup of tea/ coffee then go for it, it might help, and small amounts of caffeine won't do any harm. Good luck! x

Congrats! I had headaches when I first gave up caffeine (before getting pregnant) and they went within 2 days - how long have they been going on? As others said, you can have some caffeine - I start the day with a normal tea before switching to decaf tea. The tiredness does ease, promise, in the meantime just give in to it if you need and have lots of early nights. Hope it improves!

On another note - why would you avoid decaf tea? Am I missing something?
