Gained a lot of fat in first trimester - anything I can do about it before birth?

I am a musclular and stocky build but was VERY sporty pre-pregnancy. In my first ten weeks (am 14wks now) I ate too many simple carbs (buttered toast) and couldnt' stomach fruit or leafy raw veg. It was also Christmas around the time I conceived so I was eating/drinking that week. I felt absolutely horrendous in terms of tiredness and nausea but didn't actually throw up and I put on about 6kg before my booking in appointment which was mostly fat. My bum and thighs are noticably larger than before, as are my upper arms and I have fat folds on my back.

I KNOW that I will be able to shift this after the birth when I can get back to the sports I love (and I will do them for the love of the sports not for vanity reasons).

BUT... I am worried about going through this entire summer with my new hugh things and arms rubbing and just generally being very big and uncomfortable and unmobile - as well as the bump which I will be carrying around.

I have not itention of starving myself and my baby but is there ANYTHING I can do to get control of my fat stores over the next couple of months? Did anybody else manage to lose a bit of fat in 2nd trimester ready for carrying the additional bump weight??

Has anybody got a good diet plan? (my apetite is not a good guide now as I'm always hungry) Or any good exercise dvds? I'm doing as much walking as possible, a bit of gentle off-road cycling and preg yoga but feel I need more (can't swim as nose is irritated by chlorine).

Expat used mayo instead of butter and as a dip to help make carrots and cucumber more palatable for me. I am probably addicted to exercise, which is why my definition of active is way above most; I was intending on re-training as a personal trainer - but pg has put a hold on that.
bad and humphrey I did have quite bad morning sickness till week 20/21, but I did have days when I managed to drag my body out. Although I've been sicker this pgm, I've not been as tired as I was with DD1, but maybe that's because I'm now running after her

beginnings wouldn't have believed you first pregnancy but this time round I've put on 2 stone (32 weeks now) and I can still put on my pre-pg jeans, although I can't do the buttons up (if I could that would be worrying)

How about getting a proper bike and pointing it up a hill for a change? Wink

Seriously, road cycling is far more do-able in pregnancy. A friend of mine has blogged about keeping up her cycling through her pregnancy.

I did body pump til quite late on in my pregnancies, it really helped with the lower back and hip pain. I only struggled with the chest and triceps tracks because I was lying on my back, not because of the weights. Of course it's easy to adapt the triceps track, less so with the chest.and you need todo adapted abs later on. And obv you need to go easy with the stretching, due to softer ligaments. But a good instructor will be able to advise you

If you are used to exercising quite intensively you will hate doing pregnancy yoga and aqua fit for 9 months. I would find that really depressing .remember that , depending on what kind of labour and birth you have, you will need to take some time off afterwards.

Hopefully you will find your second trimester much easier than your first.at least by your third you get sympathy and considering from others, as you are obv pg.

badguider i had terrible fatigue in the first trimester with number 2 pregnancy, had thought people were basically making it up before it happened to me! Never had it with the first, but I remember being so tired second time round i could have cried some days. I know it's hard, but it gets better. Try to make the most of the days you feel ok. Exercise did help me sometimes, energised me, put me in a better mood etc. Hope you feel better soon!

I ran well into the 3rd trimester first time but still put on 3 stone. I started running again at 6 weeks and got back into shape reasonably quickly. Am pregnant with no 2 at the moment and early days (9 weeks) but still running 15 miles a week though at a much slower pace than usual. Hope to carry on as long as it feels ok to do so.

DVD-wise, I'm following the Tracy Anderson Pregnancy Project. Basically there's a DVD for each month of your pregnancy. I'm on month 3 and I swear they're getting harder...they're definitely getting longer. The 1st was 30mins, the 3rd is 56mins!!! No cardio, just some work with light weights for arms, a lot of leg and bum exercises and some indirect abs work. I love it - makes my muscles feel really connected. As long as I can feel relatively toned, I won't worry about expanding a bit...

Cardio before pg I used to use a trampette (but that's a no go now!), dancing, and very intense horseriding but all a bit too high impact now. So I supplement my cardio with an hour's dog walk a day.

...my tip is put your exercise clothes on and you'll do it! I've had nausea for the last 3 weeks and it's only this week I'm really getting back to exercising. Still have nausea, but I put my workout clothes on, my DVD in and I just do it. The more you think about it, the worse it gets...wanted nothing more than to sleep on the sofa earlier but I tried to imagine how good I would feel after showering and it worked!

Glad you are feeling a littel better, guider

Badguider FWIW my cousin and I are both martial artists and she continued until her 5th month, doing everything but sparring (doing forms, drills, etc instead). Not the same level of training but it helped her control her weight gain and left her in good shape for the birth.

badguider · 14/03/2013 10:08

spaghetti - I do a throwing art so not much opportunity to practice without hitting the floor! we do a bit of balance work (taking to the tipping point) but couldn't really make a whole session out of that.

My weight has really stabilised in the last few weeks and even gone down in the past week after the massive gain I had in the first ten weeks.

I feel much better today so am going out for a bike ride on non-technical paths. Looking forward to it :)

That all sounds very positive guider. I'm sure it will lift your mood too.

spaghettibolognese · 17/03/2013 23:40

Glad you found something that you can still do Smile. Yeah I had a think about your post yesterday and it only occurred to me then that it might be based on throws and locks instead. All the best with everything! Smile
