talking to your bump

Do you do it? Did you feel silly at first?

I'm 27 weeks, I know he can hear, but somehow I just can't talk to him. I tried when I was in the bath earlier because I wanted to see if it's possible to make him move a bit and get tired before I try to sleep and he begins his nightly tap dancing ritual. I couldn't even get a single word out. Feel stupid even though I'm just on my own and nobody would hear anyway.

I do - but most often to say please stop kicking me in the ribs! My dp started talking to bubs first I think which made it feel a bit more normal. I wouldn't worry and just do whatever feels right to you - it'll hear you talking to others/singing along to the radio anyway!

My DH talks to baby every day without fail, by placing his face over my belly. I talk to her but I'm not sure if she can hear me from all the way up here? Blush

Try singing instead (any songs, doesn't have to be nursery rhymes) - baba will still hear your voice but it always made me feel a bit less daft :)

phoenixrose314 · 10/03/2013 11:56

I do, but usually as another poster said to say "Stop kicking mummy please!!" or, more recently, "Time to come out now!"

If you don't feel comfortable talking to your bump, don't do it! Because sound travels in waves/vibrations, your baby will learn to recognise your voice just through hearing you talk in day to day situations. So your baby already knows you and your voice - he/she isn't missing out, I promise you!!

No, it makes me feel ridiculous.

Baby can't differentiate between me talking to her or me asking DH if he wants a cuppa. I'm sure she'll know the sound of my awful singing to the radio voice by the time she shows up!

id agree with others, its best just to do whatever you like. I'm only 9 weeks and talk to mine, but that's just for me and I'm a crazy lady!!! Confused

I didn't really know what to say to my bump so I read him a story . I downloaded some Thomas the tank on to my phone through my kindle app. So gender biased but he does love a story and kicks all the way through.

Msbluesky32 · 10/03/2013 16:11

Yes but mostly if I'm on my own in the house. Sometimes I will chat to her about doing things like 'let's get ready to go out shall we'. If anyone saw me they'd probably think I was a complete fruit cake but I've felt her there for so long and she is such a part of me now that it just feels right to acknowledge she is there too.

I've been doing the reading a book thing too - cat in the hat. I read somewhere that baby will recognise rhythm when born ( if read often). I just like it because I can't think what to say Smile

I'll talk back to it sometimes after getting a kick - like a 'hello!' or a 'there you are!' but only when I'm on my own! Have also done a mini-commentary in the mornings when trying to drag myself out of bed for work 'come on then you, time to get up' types and have even made up silly songs with no real tune or rhyme. I do this fairly quietly when I'm walking home or to work... Yes, I'm a mentalist.

I think it'll be easier to talk to it when it's more of a bump and closer to my mouth.

MisselthwaiteManor · 11/03/2013 09:35

I feel too silly talking out loud but talk to him/her in my head which kind of defeats the object. I do sing loudly and badly to the radio all day so it will still hear my voice.

dinkystinky · 11/03/2013 09:52

I dont talk to my bump - but DH and my two DSs do! I like to just sit and listen to music with it though.
