Hi,

Which electric breast bump would you buy from the ones below?

Ameda Lactaline Personal Dual Electric Breastpump

Medela Swing Electric Breastpump with Calma

Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump

I'd welcome other recommendations too of course! :)

Thanks! :)

MinnesotaNice, thanks, its interesting to read all the different perspectives. Would you say a double pump speeded the whole time it took, and worked well? People seem to have differing experiences.

Princesspond, thank you! Its good someone commented on the price :) I'll be working from home so wont need to take it into work, maybe just once every two months.

Can I just say, please google open and closed systems in breastpumps. Personally I wouldn't touch an open system, and Medela isn't afaik. Ameda is.

I have an older model of the Ameda Lactaline and it's great. It's also a closed system pump so you can sell it on or lend it to people without having to worry about hygene issues.

I have only used it as a single pump though, I've never tried to pump both breasts at once.

AmandaPayne, thanks!

Just came across Why you shouldn't buy, sell, or borrow a second hand Medela Swing pump ...

Ah, yes, that's exactly one of the blog entries I was thinking of. Yucky eh?

MinnesotaNice · 08/03/2013 22:03

I've never used a single, but I can't imagine that a double isn't faster. Pumping took me between 20-30 mins, including setup, rinsing, and repacking. Plus, at least for me, when I had a letdown of milk, it happen on both sides. If I hadn't been using a doble, then the milk coming from the side without the shield would have been wasted since there wouln't have been a container to catch it, IYSWIM?

PacificDogwood · 08/03/2013 22:06

I had the Lactaline and got on well with it.
They also do a breast 'flange' or whatever the soft, rubbery bit is called that goes directly on to your bood for larger norkage which made all the difference for me.
You can also pump both sides at the same time with it and it is v compact.
I exclusively expressed for premature DS2 and managed well with it after initially having a dual hospital grade pump on loan from the hospital.

Radiator1234 · 08/03/2013 22:19

I would recommend the Medela Swing I used it every day for 5 months to express at least one bottle a day for the dream feed. It did pack in (can't remember why) after about 5 months but I still had the receipt so took it back to Boots and they exchanged it no questions asked. Which is good as now I have a nearly new one for my upcoming arrival. Don't really know anyone who had any of the others all my friends had the Medela Swing. Never really heard bad things about it. I am sure there are reviews of all these on mumsnet somewhere good luck.

Minnes, Pacific & Radiator, thank you ladies :) seems people seem to be getting on well with both swing and lactaline.

I hired a double medela symphony when ds was born with a TT and would latch at all. At £45 a month it wasn't cheap but compared to formula, which was our only other option, it was about the same. I also bought a swing from eBay and used the bottles etc I got with the symphony for £45 I mainly used it when we were visiting or somewhere the double wasn't practical. I was just as efficient at getting the milk out, only one boob at a time!

So on your case I would say get the swing of only for the occasional use. If you plan on exclusively expressing hire a hospital grade pump (or see if the hospital loan them out)

If you get a doule pump, for it to work you'll need some sort of hands free device! You can buy expressing bras that the funnels fit through, however, I just bout a cheapo bra from Asda £5 I think an cut a hole for each nipple/funnel to fit through.

MammaCici · 09/03/2013 10:53

I rented a medela hospital grade pump. It ended up costing a fortune! When I sent it back I got a medela swing. I found it just as good as the hospital grade pump. It felt the very same and produced similar results.
I also had a hand pump which was pretty poor in comparison. I'll be sticking with my swing as needed when DC2 comes in a couple of months.

elvislives2012 · 09/03/2013 20:32

Sorry OP just saw your question. I've got the single one. Don't think you need the double one. In the morning I pump 5oz or so from one boob and feed DD from the other. Have a massive stash now!
Don't know if u need to worry about buying one yet as it may take a few weeks to regulate supply and pumping may confuse things Wink

Twattybollocks · 10/03/2013 06:12

I've got the Medela swing and I can't get a tune out of the ladies with it at all! Hv has Lent me the ameda and it's fab, much more effective.

Grumpla · 10/03/2013 06:38

Ameda Lactaline. I expressed full time and it was the best.

You can shut off one side of the dual pump if you only want to express from one side. It's a closed system, far more hygienic. Can run on batteries as well as plugging in. Very sturdy. And I paid well over £100 for mine a couple of years ago so yes that price is a bargain!

ButteryJam · 10/03/2013 13:11

Thank you ladies! :)

Grumpla, thank you, ordered the Amdea one :)
