Can't remember if I am not supposed to lie on side or back?

When I was pg with DS we kept hearing about the fact we shouldn't sleep on left/right/back? I can't remember which. Am pg with DC2 and wondered if anyone can tell me and is it still an issue?

Official advice is to lie on your left side, but I think you should just do whatever feels comfortable!

It was the back. But to be honest, I do, because I can't always get comfy on my left (which is recommended), so I'm just going for whatever I feel most comfortable with, and this usually varies during the night.

I saw my mw today who said sleep what ever way is comfy. If you get dizzy on your back try to roll over. I'm getting very breathless on my left so sleeping on my right which she said is fine

It's about the nerves - lying on your right side can affect blood flow and lying on your back can affect the nerves due to the weight of the baby. Ideal is lying on your left side. I found left side most comfortable anyway but sleep on a maternity pillow so my bump is supported and there's something under my back so it's ok if I do roll on to my back.

They say lying on your back reduces the blood flow to your baby and legs (i.e. less oxygen) because the weight of your uterus will squash it. like standing on a hose pipe, will slow the water going through. so it's not good for your circulation, and can slow the baby's heart rate. but to be honest, unless you've got a complicated pregnancy, i can't see it doing any damage. i've never heard of anyone dying, or miscarrying because they slept on their back for 4 hours... so do what you think is comfortable!! my bump always kicks lots when i'm on my back, so always end up rolling over anyway (if my partner hasn't already rolled me over because i'm snoring so loud! ha!) xx

At some stage on your pg you will be unable to lie on your back - but my midwife said lying on the left hand side is good for preparing baby for birth i.e optimum positioning. I don't think any positions are dangerous if they are comfy. Lying on your baby will restrict blood flow to the placenta - but you'll feel dizzy:gasping for breath before that happens!!

Lying on back not baby!!!

Yes, lying on your back you'll feel very peculiar before there's any danger to the baby. Lying on your left is supposed to be best for positioning (but I'm here to tell you that 9 months of diligently sleeping on my left hasn't got this bub into a good position!). Go with whatever's comfy - it'll be uncomfy soon enough!
