We have just had the results of our 12 week screening tests (bloods and nuchal measurements) and found out that our risk is 1/3200, which is pretty low. However, we have had such a long road to get to this point (including 4 rounds of IVF) we are both worrying whether we are the 1/3200. i just can't seem to get it out of my head. I'm 41 and we had both assumed that the screening tests would come back as high risk and I would automatically have to have an amniocentesis (which we were happy with). Now we have got our results, we have been told we won't be offered an amnio on the NHS, as we are low risk. I just don't know what to do - we both really want to know that the baby is OK, and I know I will spend the rest of my pregnancy worrying if we don't find out, but I am now worried about whether we should have a private amnio. Sorry to be rambling a bit, but i would appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to offer.

Also, can anyone recommend a good clinic for a private amnio (if we decide to go down that route) - preferably near to manchester?

Your result is a good one, why after the journey you've had would you want to risk a mc of 1-100 on a 1-3000 odd chance, there's no reason just because of your age you will be an unlucky one, that said pregnancy is a frought and worrying time but with every one mile stone you reach the next thing comes along for you to worry about, I believe there is a test called harmony that is non invasive which I think is about £400 but if you have to pay privately you may prefer that, I'm sure someone will come along and offer you details as I think they look for much more markers as its a combined with scan and is alot more acurate, take abit of time though and think about it, your results are good you had obviously just got it into your head they wouldn't be and are are maybe still thinking along the lines of its incorrect

Congratulations of your pregnancy!
To get the nt result was that at 12 week scan, combined scan and blood test?
I am the worlds worst worrier, but honestly relax. I personally wouldn't want to risk the 1:100 for an amino, and the extra worry waiting for the result but if it would put your mind at rest then go for it. You have been given a very good result, but if you found out you were the 1, would that change what you would do with the pregnancy?

I think the Harmony test is the best option if you can afford it but the risk of a baby with down's is far less than the risk of a mc from amnio. I think you need to try and put it out of your head but I totally sympathise - I regretted having test because "1 in xxx" of course is pretty useless if you end up being the 1. I pretty much decided I would want baby anyway though. Ladies at your age usually have a far far higher risk factor so I honestly think your score is brilliant.

AS above posts ^^

Remember also that DS/the trisomies are only one condition that could affect your baby that this test is for. There are lots of others that could happen that cannot be tested for, and things that can happen at birth too.

I don't mean this to come across as insensitive/harsh/make you worry about something else instead, but please don't focus on this one test that you have had a really good result for, and ruin your enjoyment of pregnancy. Espeically after such a hard fight for it. Have you spoken to your MW about your worries?

There's a big thread about the Harmony Test in antenatal choices board you might want to check out.
