or is there a risk of salmonella or listeria or something because of the temperature it's kept at?

expatinscotland · 04/05/2006 11:01

No.

Listeria risk.

Esmummy · 04/05/2006 11:01

Nope we cant cupcakes or mcflurrys or milkshakes from maccy d's etc.
Anything that is not kept at a freezing temperature constantly, the machines get turned off at night time etc still with the mix in.

cupcakes · 04/05/2006 11:02

I had one two days ago. Never heard of this before.

lunavix · 04/05/2006 11:04

Oh crap. HV told a friend a month ago that it was okay cos they were pasteurised (?) so I've had about 6.

Esmummy · 04/05/2006 11:06

You can have the Mr Whippy ones you get out of a freeer in a shop but not the ones out of the machine on the van.

cupcakes · 04/05/2006 11:10

mine were from a van. And I had a vague recollection that they weren't recommended but because my midwife had mentioned them I thought I'd got it wrong.

lunavix · 04/05/2006 11:17

poo lol I have the van ones. Freezer ones are yucky :)

I didn't have it all last pg because of this, but since the sodding HV said it was okay I've been woofing them down. Argh.

wools · 04/05/2006 12:15

Also had a Mr Whippy....just did not cross my mind that it was risky although I know I've been told in the past.

welshmum · 04/05/2006 12:18

wonder if they're banned by French medics too....

oliveoil · 04/05/2006 12:22

I was told this so didn't have any

but I was also told not to have parma ham but greed took over

so, no idea really

diddle · 04/05/2006 14:27

i've had a lick of one today, but i know we're not supposed to. oops. it was just too tempting.

ja9 · 04/05/2006 14:28

no... and never have they seemed so appealing as when pg!!

diddle - Shock a whole lick? Wink

primogen · 04/05/2006 14:30

There seem to be more things I can't eat than things I can! Because I'm not supposed to eat pate or soft cheese, that is all I want! and now Mr Whippy too...Smile

notasheep · 04/05/2006 14:35

Enjoy your ice cream-it could be worse,i was seriously addicted to Mcdonalds milkshakes and yet my normal tipple was black coffee

jellyjelly · 04/05/2006 17:57

They are also bad for your heart too.

Mrwhippy0 · 07/08/2014 20:53

You can, just not home-made Ice Cream, Have a look at the NHS website, its brill, dispels any rumour and speculation...dead. VIVA La MR WHIPPY

Boudica1990 · 07/08/2014 21:24

Oh well I've eaten about a dozen mc flurries and soft ice creams from harvester....I'm fine. I won't worry about it now what's done is done and baby is being evicted on Sunday.

monkeyfacegrace · 07/08/2014 21:27

What Confused

The world has gone fucking mad.

Nobody is taking away my wine, fags, AND MCflurries. The first two I can accept and have binned, but ice cream?

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 07/08/2014 21:35

Yes you can. Look at Mrwhippy0 's link.

goodasitgets · 07/08/2014 21:37

Honestly, I wouldn't eat a mr whippy from a van if I wasn't pregnant. My gran was violently ill and in hospital in ICU from a van that hadn't cleaned the machine properly. I would have to check but I believe it was listeria. I eat mcflurrys because I've heard they have a rigorous cleaning schedule

Lalalax3 · 07/08/2014 21:41

I've eaten Mr Whippys, McD's shakes, McFlurrys (McFlurries?!). I'm still here. My child is fine.

squizita · 07/08/2014 21:46

AAARGH hysteria and misinformation alert!!!
Yes, this kind of thing angers me. I suffer from pregnancy related anxiety and have a high risk pregnancy following multiple losses. Poorly researched, knee jerk 'safety' information worries women needlessly and does nothing to protect babies. Nothing.

CHECK THE NHS WEBSITE AS PP HAVE SUGGESTED.

I'm not an 'expecting better' fan. I stick to the rules like glue. I count kicks every waking hour. I've had CBT so I can do anything with my life except constantly worry and count kicks.
But I follow real rules. Rules I have checked with specialist medical professionals.

Yes. You can eat soft whip ice cream from reputable chain restaurants.
They are expected to take apart and sterilise their machines every night (trust me, they do this). I'm talking about McDonalds, Nandos - that kind of place.
There is nothing in the ice cream or milkshake itself which is an inherent risk (this is why some people say it is a food poisoning risk and others say it has egg in). See here for ingredients: www.mcdonalds.co.uk/ukhome/product_nutrition.dessertstreats.1255.aero-mint-chocolate-mcflurry.html

No I personally wouldn't have anything out of a machine in an ice cream van or the corner of a seaside shop. Though NHS direct doesn't care. You cannot tell if they've sterilised their equipment over night and there is a (minor) risk of food poisoning. Not necessarily listeria (20 cases per year in the whole of the UK max- very rare) but any food poisoning isn't ideal when you're pregnant.

squizita · 07/08/2014 21:48

Lunavix so a health visitor (presumably nurse trained or similar) tells you yes, and two random people off the internet say no... and you disbelieve the health visitor? The person who visits people to tell them about hygiene and health? :)

Am I going mad or is this thread from 2006?
