This is our first pregnancy and are not sure how I will be feeling by then and what i will be able to cope with in terms of exercise etc. We are trying to find holiday ideas for 2 weeks that satisfy the following and are getting in a bit of a pickle!!

  1. Active
  2. We're not good at spending more than 4 days at a beach as we get bored.
  3. As 'different' as possible - i.e. not typical package holidays

Please help as this will be our last child-free holiday and it's got to be good for DH too!!

The greek island of Santorini is lovely - interesting sites to see, easy to get about, lovely scenary - could combine with other islands or a visit to Athens.

Somewhere not too hot, with opportunity to lie about and relax once you have exausted yoursleves sightseeing or whatever.

Skribble · 03/05/2006 23:41

How different? Are we talking whale watching or city sightseeing?

milward · 03/05/2006 23:44

what time of year will you be going on hols?

Morningnewspaper · 03/05/2006 23:46

Ooh thank you for these so far. I've already been Island hopping in Greece (where I met an ex) and it was gorgeous! I would say more towards whale watching than site seeing - we like 'nature' as opposed to museums. Typical holidays range from clubbing in Ibiza to horse riding in Kenya and trekking in Thailand. Will I feel particularly tired? I know certain sports are out (diving etc) and I'm not sport mad at all actually but a bit is always a good thing!

just go to a beautiful warm place and SLEEP SLEEP SLEEP, read all the books you've always wanted to read, shag loads and relax. Wink

how about one of \link{http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,27890-2155135_1,00.html\these?}

Good point - August!
I also hate flying so very long flights from the UK are out! i.e. no Australia

I would go somewhere luxururious and child free, deserted beaches and trips into the jungle or where ever.

milward · 03/05/2006 23:50

Hmmm - south of France? - Avignon, Nime, Carcassonne for culture & then the countryside for relaxing - plus beach if you want.

Hi Morning!
I was just five months when we went to Muscat (Oman, 7 hr flight) over Easter - it was bliss because by that stage I really did just want to relax and be pampered in an amazing hotel for a few nights as our last hols as a couple. We had one day sightseeing and it really drained me in the heat. Don't underestimate how tired you might be by then, even if you're normally active. Or you might be perfectly fine being as active as normal on holiday - just don't commit yourself to something where you have to be haring around and just enjoy spending quality time together!
Also bear in mind that most airlines have a restriction on how many weeks you can be when you fly, if you're planning to fly. As I said in a long post on travel when I got back from Muscat, we had a big row on the way home before I was allowed on the plane, and I was just 25 weeks, and their cut-off wasn't even unitl 28 weeks.
Check also that your travel insurer will cover you to travel at that stage of your pregnancy - mine didn't and I had a last minute scramble to find a new policy (Post Office were excellent).
And if you are going out of Europe, check whether you'll need jabs as you can't have most of them while pg.
Other than that, go for it! Europe in the summer will probably be far enough anyway, and you could even drive rather than fly.
Let us know what you decide!

Thanks everso - it seems like the general consensus is that relaxing is highest on the agenda at that stage??? The South of France does sound quite tempting I must say! I must try and convince my DH! Or we could find somewhere where I can relax while he's being active...
Thanks too for the fab tips Pinchy - I will make sure I check with all airlines - not something that had crossed my mind to be honest!!!

Other people may be different but I found I couldn't tolerate the heat like I normally would. I was 26 weeks pregnant when I went on holiday and I found walking about in the heat very difficult. At the very least I would make sure whereever you book that your room is air conditioned !!

Pinchypants · 05/05/2006 11:54

Air conditioning, oh yes - don't consider a hotel room without it in August! And you will definitely be wanting to be near water, whether pool, sea or river.

Forgot to say also that don't leave home without your maternity notes.

Morningnewspaper · 05/05/2006 13:20

DH wants to know if anyone has had an acive holiday at this time without any problems? Also - is it irresponsible to go off piste as it were (walking in fields etc away from civilisation)????

We did Paris when I was 6 months Pg (our honeymoon Grin).

Nice food (hot chocolate, croissants, cakes...), nice views, great public transport. Lots of art and other museums, which we liked.

I'd also recommend Scandinavia-esp stockholm- in part because you will never be able to afford it once the baby's born!

I like city holidays when pg. you can walk lots if you want to, but if (suddenly) you can't be ar$ed there is public transport + cafes on tap.

would suggest renting a flat if going for 2 weeks, its lovely having your own place to go back to, esp when pg.

I went to Iceland when I was 6 months pregnant. Booked way before I even met my husband. Very enjoyable. Did some sightseeing walks, went to the blue lagoon, very relaxing.. Went to Yorkhiree dales at 5 months and there was way too much walking.
