£108 for two fillings Is this right?

I have a maternity exemption certificate.
I need two fillings and requested that I have the white ones, not the amalgam ones as I am pg and I know they have been banned in a lot of countries.I thought I would have to pay something, but I had no idea that it would cost so much! Is this right?

I think its because the white ones are classed as cosmetic.

White fillings aren't covered under nhs dental. If you want them then you will pay private prices.

iseenodust · 04/03/2013 10:25

Sounds fair for private. I just paid £140 for a check up, scale & polish, 2 fillings and some coating for a tooth that is heat sensitive.

Indith · 04/03/2013 10:26

Yup. Because they are not covered you don't just pay a top up or the difference in cost, you pay full on private prices.

GummyAdams · 04/03/2013 10:26

Do the really cost £54 each?!Shock I thought the actual work would be covered by the certificate, with just the materials(white filling stuff) to pay for?
Seems not. DH wants me to go for the white ones, but it is a big chunk of money isn't it?

Unless it's front teeth they'll charge you full whack for them to be white - 104 is about right I think.

GummyAdams · 04/03/2013 10:27

Just read that Indith; that makes sense, thank you.

I agree that it seems unfair that you have to pay for everything when all you want is a different filling inside, but it's what they all do.

Bramshott · 04/03/2013 10:30

What about gold? I got some gold fillings done for free when I was pregnant.

Indith · 04/03/2013 10:34

To be fair to the dentist I don't think it is a money making scam of theirs, it is the way the NHS funding system works. The dentist CAN'T claim the money for work that is not covered so only charging the customer the difference in price would result in them being out of pocket as they would be unable to claim for the work done.

GummyAdams · 04/03/2013 10:36

Really Bram? Will ask the dentist about that. Probably being paranoid about amalgam.
Am so ashamed of my teeth- they've just got so much worse with my pregnancies. I am a flosser and a mouthwasher and DH is a 30 second brusher and never has anything wrong with his. Very unfairGrin

Bimey that's cheap! I was charged 120 quid for a tiny white one about four years ago and the bloody thing fell out without me noticing. I now have a nice deep cavity and probably a completely dead tooth. Currently covered in temp filling until after I have given birth then I will go back and get it done properly.

GummyAdams · 04/03/2013 11:08

Blimmin heck Thingie. I've got off lightly! Just had a thought, does anyone know if they suggest another kind of filling when you're pg? I am still using my certificate from DS1 and told the dentist I didn't wnt amalgam becase I'm breastfeeding as I hadn't had scan at this point, so I haven't actually mentioned the pregnancy at all yet. Will theyeven still do the fillings?

Blimey..I got 3 white fillings done for free when I had my maternity exemption certificate. I didn't appreciate my luck! No wonder the dental nurse said 'how lovely' it was that I'd got white ones...

rrreow · 04/03/2013 13:14

Yep and that sounds like a great deal! I think my dentist charges about £80 per white filling! (I'm in central London though so might be the reason)

notso · 04/03/2013 13:33

Shock I had a free white one when I was pregnant last year, I didn't ask for white, the dentist just did it. It annoyingly fell out last month and was replaced with amalgam, still free as DS3 is under 1 though.

MrsMorton · 04/03/2013 15:09

The white fillings have a material in them that is banned in some countries too... amalgam is just a band wagon for some people.

kittykatsforever · 04/03/2013 15:29

Yes that sounds right for white, after dd I had to have one and would have been free for a silver but £100 odd for the one Shock In white, I wouldn't lie about being pregnant, maybe they may do it in white for free but more likely it'll be a temp and you'd go back after birth to have it put in as a silver I'd you don't want to pay, it's important he'd know anyway

MaternityNanny · 04/03/2013 16:26

In London, I pay £160 per white filling..perhaps I need to get the train somewhere cheaper?

noblegiraffe · 04/03/2013 16:30

I was quoted £75 for a white filling but in the end the tooth had to be extracted, and a bridge put in, which was free.
I'm bfing and was told that amalgam fillings were fine.
