You can take paracetamol, and make sure to drink plenty of fluids, also worth opening your windows to let germs out and fresh air in! (that was my mum got told to do when struck down with flu) fingers crossed u feel better soon Smile

I really feel for you. I had a bad cold last week and was desperately trying to find anything I could take to feel better as I got married last weekend!
Unfortunately all you can take is paracetamol. I found drinking orange juice helped me feel better and spent a couple of days on the sofa.

hope you feel better soonThanks

I've just had the cold from hell. I found lemon, honey and grated ginger in hot water to be a surprisingly good substitute for lemsip. Get well soon!

yes, make sure you keep your temperature down with paracetamol, thats the important thing, and plenty of fluid, try ice lollies too. Lots of bed get well soon!

I had a hellish cold at this stage. Keep an eye on your temperature and take paracetamol to keep it down if possible.

Lots of fluids, lots of rest. That's about it though unfortunately.

Oh, MightBeMad's recipe for "lemsip" is a winner too - lots of that.

LittleChickpea · 03/03/2013 09:17

Thank you everyone. You really appreciate medicine when you can't have it.

MightBeMad thanks for the lemsip recipe.

Sounds strange but an old wives tale is to cut an onion in half and keep it in your bedroom. It's supposed to absorb any viruses.
I don't know if scientifically it is correct and sounds unlikely but I did this when my dad had a bone marrow transplant so I could avoid contracting a cold and passing it on to him. I didn't get any coughs or colds the whole time the onion was there. (Replace it with a new one after a couple of days...chuck in the bin!)
My DH thought I was weird but I thought it was worth a try.
Having the windows open and drinking plenty will also help.

poor you! i had bronchitis at 6 weeks and was prescribed anti biotics, so you can get stronger stuff if it gets worse.

you can also take tylenol which i found really helpful with fever.

good luck.

If you get really bad, have a temperature or obvious sinus/chest infection do go to the docs. I got put on antibiotics last week after a week of trying to keep what a thought was a cold at bay with paracetamol & honey/lemon drinks. I ended up with it in my chest and sinuses so it could have been flu.

The doctor said I probably should have seen him earlier as its better to get well quickly than try and fight it off if your immune system can't cope. Whilst the antibiotics don't remove the cold/flu, they did clear the infection which then helped me start to shift it. It's weird that you can't take most common cold remedies but can have antibiotics - though I said that to my DH (who studied chemistry) and he laughed at me!
