I have a week off at the end of April to go away, abroad, somewhere before baby arrives. DP doesn't want to leave it much later, which is fine by me. So has anyone any suggestions?? I'm thinking somewhere on the med as I don't want to do long haul, plus it'll be nice and warm (just so baby gets lots of vitamin d, honest...)

Obviously don't want somewhere rowdy. Somewhere we can relax but with some stuff to do during the day. And good food, to make up for the current lack of wine in my life. I would also like the reassurance of a decent healthcare system should anything go wrong, though I have no reason to believe anything will.

We went to Sicily a few years back, which would have been perfect - and good for anyone clicking on this thread looking for ideas of their own. So can anyone who knows southern Europe better than me suggest anywhere lovely?

Thanks in advance!

We went to Malta at a similar time in my pg.

Positives are: Italianesque food; short flight; small island so you can see sights easily; lots of history (if you like that) and almost everyone speaks English so I felt comfortable that a hospital visit (if needed) would be easy.

Negatives: not so many pretty 'lie on the beach' places as it;s quite rocky, and therefore most beaches are pretty busy. But in April that won't be so bad. Some parts a bit tacky.

I went to Mauritius at 22 weeks with dc1. Was fabulous. I know it's a bit further but was worth it for us as went in jan and wanted guaranteed sunshine.

Id stay within the EU if your thinking about medical care, actually with all the horror stories with the NHS at the moment I don't think you need to worry about the medical care anywhere in the world. I gave birth in Southern Turkey, had all my pre natal care and gave birth - very cheaply and the care and medical expertise was brilliant! Ive done a fair bit of travelling and its very unusual to struggle with language barriers anywhere in the world these days, think most people have a fair grasp of English especially in holiday type places. Have a great holiday, wherever you choose.

Thanks all. Will certainly look at Malta. Mauritious sounds gorgeous too but might be a bit far for DP - he's not a fan of the long haul at the best of times!

Robyn, I thought most European touristy place doctors would have a fairly good grasp of English until I went to Sicily. I ended up in hospital on the last night there and the doctor said precisely three words in English: 'pregnancy?' (I wasn't) and 'pretty dress'. Not particularly helpful!

We went to a quiet part of kos when I was 28-30 weeks, going away is a great idea, it was just what I needed then!

Crete is nice, nice and warm in april, not too far, and most people speak English so no probs with healthcare if needed. Have a great holiday, I'm trying not to kill myself with jealously!

We are off to Biarritz at end of April. I'll be 24 weeks and we've booked a room in a chateau about three miles out in the countryside. I can't wait! Might see you there Smile

I'd second Crete, I went 18 months ago (admittedly in the autumn) and it was absolutely lovely :)

We went to Croatia when I was 21 wks with DC1. Lovely, especially Dubrovnik!
