Do I have to buy a new mattress?

The moses basket came with one, It is second hand & both the basket & mattress are in an immaculate condition.

cherrycherry41 · 02/03/2013 10:52

Yes. Absolutely yes.
They are really cheap to but new, think i got mine from mothercare for a tenner.

cherrycherry41 · 02/03/2013 10:53

*buy

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 02/03/2013 10:55

Yes you should, I have one in ds' but its been in the loft for 3 years so will be buying a new one.

Msbluesky32 · 02/03/2013 11:01

We bought ours new and it came with a really flimsy mattress - but I spied some nice thicker ones in John lewis forvabout £20. i might buy one of those anyway

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 02/03/2013 11:44

Yes. Second hand mattresses are a SIDS risk. Mine was a tenner online. Imo It's just not worth taking any chances. The rest of it will be fine.

gloti · 02/03/2013 12:46

can I ask why the risk? I understand that's the guidance and I fully intend to follow it!
but when I mentioned this to my mum she said that makes no sense and that back in Spain people would pass baskets and cots down from family member to family member and it has always been ok...

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 02/03/2013 12:58

SIDS is quite rare, about 300 babies die a year. I'm not sure they know why reusing a mattress is a risk, only that there's a correlation between the two. Like I say, for the sake of a tenner, I'm not taking any chances!

ButteryJam · 02/03/2013 13:04

Can you wash the mattress?

I'm receiving two second hand ones and will probably be buying two new mattresses.

HavingALittleFaithBaby · 02/03/2013 13:20

(From what reading I've done) it seems they think it might be chemicals in mattresses that cause breathing difficulties. I'm not sure washing them will make a difference. I'd just buy new.

This is the up to date info from the FSiD website

What kind of mattress should I use?
It is very important that your baby?s mattress is kept clean and dry. Ideally you should buy a new mattress for each new baby. If you are not able to do this, use the one you have, as long as it was made with a completely waterproof cover and has no tears, cracks or holes. Clean and dry it thoroughly. Check that the mattress is in good condition; is flat and firm, not soft; fits the cot without any gaps; and doesn?t sag. Never sleep your baby on a pillow, cushion, bean bag or waterbed.

I know it's the centre of all evil etc the size I wanted was out of stock in mothercare so I got mine online amazon came within 3 days.

UserNameAngst · 02/03/2013 13:52

I got both cot and Moses mattresses from babymattressesonline.co.uk/ and was very pleased with them.

HPsauceonbaconbuttiesmmm · 02/03/2013 14:21

Another vote for babymatressesonline. Used them for DS cotbed mattress, which still looks perfect after 2 years continuous use. Bought Moses mattress and cotbed mattress again this time. You can get very cheap to top luxury.

highlandbird · 02/03/2013 14:47

I would say for the sake of a tenner it's not worth the risk, my sil gave me a second hand mattress that her dd had used for four weeks and I still chucked it out and bought a new one. I've bought a new one as well for dc2 due in six weeks, even though the last one is only 2 years old. Bought mine in mothercare for about a tenner, could you call to ask when they will be getting new stock in?
And I say that as someone who has virtually everything second hand for DS, I would just buy a new one and not mention it to your mum!

Sunshinewithshowers · 02/03/2013 17:29

Thanks, will keep searching.
Its 67x30. Seems to be a bit small compared to some.

John Lewis do 2 different sizes - 66 cm and 75cm. Everywhere else I looked only did 75 cm long.
