Aching legs/hips/lower back

I am 19+5 weeks and for several weeks have has a lower back ache and aching around my hips and top of my thighs. It's not painful as such, definitely an ache. However, this makes my legs feel heavy and a little shaky.

At night, when I sleep on my side (doesn't matter which one) I get a pain in my hip bone. This probably doesn't help the achiness the next day.

Does anyone else have this, know what it could be and what I can do to ease it?

Thank you!!

PGP (pelvic girdle pain) is very common in pregnancy. It will probably ease off (I find it comes in batches) but would be worth mentioning to your MW.

Thanks ZuleikaD. I have an appt with my midwife next week, I'll ask her about it. I don't know much about it, think I'll have a Google!

Sounds like PGP to me. You have my sympathies, I have had it since the first trimester and it has made my pregnancy a bit of an ordeal so far Sad. Things I have found helped ease the pain:

  • sleep with a pillow between your knees, it keeps your hips and spine straight and reduces the weight on your hipbone
  • a warm hot water bottle will ease the backache a bit, and ice will reduce infammation
  • wear flat shoes, it helps your lower back support the weight of your bump
  • a maternity/bump support belt might help - Mothercare sell one for 12 quid that is comfy and works well enough for mild PGP
  • osteopathy has really, really helped me. Turns out the bones, muscles and joints in my lower back and pelvis were all a bit out of balance and this was making the pain worse. A couple of sessions with the osteo reduced my pain to manageable levels and has improved my mobility and quality of life no end

Hope things get better for you.

Good advice already given. Just to add... to reduce hip pain when you're sleeping, try putting an extra duvet between the matress and sheet to lie on.

Yes sounds like PGP/SPD

Thanks everyone. So can it be PGP even if it only aches and doesn't actually hurt then?

Will try the duvet trick-hadn't thought of that!! I will also invest in another pillow or two and put it between my knees.

This is just another reason to make sure this is the last DC!! Will talk to the midwife when I see her next week.
