Hello ladies, this is my first post here and hoping for some helpful advice. This is my 4th (and final!) pregnancy and at the grand old age of 41 I'm really suffering this time around (9 weeks and 5 days - not that I'm counting!!) Apart from the dreaded HG in all its glory, the worst part at the moment is the excessive amounts of saliva that I'm producing, I can't leave the house or sleep as I'm spitting every minute or so which is driving me insane! Has anyone else suffered with this? Thank you x

Suck it up Grin

It's an exceptionally common aspect of pregnancy, don't get too upset over it. Trust me, by the time you're at the end of your pregnancy it will seem like a minuscule issue in comparison to incontinence, flatulence, diarrhoea, extreme clumsiness and stretch marks!!!

Pregnancy is NOT a glamorous occupation, but it has taught me to laugh at myself!!!

Never had this on my first three, it sounds minor but it's awful, give me the incontinence, flatulence etc anyday!
Thanks for your response :-)

I suffer from this. Chewing gum is the only thing that helps.

Thanks Natty4 & Mrs DeVere, your comments really helped, I think unless someone has suffered with this they don't understand that although it sounds trivial - how awful it can be. The gum chewing is fab and is really helping and a towel makes me less conscious of drooling at night (my poor husband and children think they're living with a St Bernard at the mo!)
Thanks again xxxx St Davids

Hi! I've had this in all of my pregnancies and I also suffered HG in all but the second. It is a recognised condition in pregnancy ('ptyalism') and is usual with HG as it's the body's attempt to neutralise the excess gastric acid that's produced when you're throwing up all the time Grin. During my first pregnancy I had to spit the stuff into glasses - truly gross as I'd leave on the arm of a chair where it would usually get knocked over by dh...
Sadly this continued for me well into the 3rd trimester (after the HG had lessened) when I was back at work. Memories of having to carry a bottle of water around with me and swallow the saliva down with a gulp of water. I'm pregnant at the moment and, along with my old friend HG, it's starting again. However, I've just started on cyclizinre which apparently can cause dry mouth so there's something to look forward to Grin

Yes, it is a big problem when connected with HG because you can't swallow the saliva without throwing up.
Implying someone should just get a sense of humour about it is not helpful IMO. When I was back at work I was always having to leave meetings etc to spit, because you can't exactly do it in front of your colleagues. Damn inconvenient to still have that even once I was well enough to be back at work!
Hope it lessens soon x

Well I feel much less alone now I must say and your responses bar one were so helpful and made me laugh! Diege I completely empathise with your glass scenario, I carry a bowl around and fill it 3 times a day and inevitably one of the kids will knock it over - they are disgusted and make no secret of the fact lol. I've had to take time off work as it's so bad, and as I run my own business it's been tough (not had day off in 10 years!). And MrsDeVere, yes, aren't the night sweats lovely, I will be surprised if my husband ever comes near me again after this pregnancy! TunipTheVegedude hit the nail on the head, to 'suck it up' is impossible with HG as it makes you sick, well even more sick if that's possible. Thanks for all your support, as although this is supposedly a common 'side effect' of pregnancy, I thought I was going slowly insane.....well more than usual anyway WinkThanks
