Private testing for GBSS

I tested positive for GBS in my last pregnancy, it was picked up in routine urine samples. I had the antibiotics in labour and all was fine. My midwife says they wouldn't offer me a test, if it's picked up in urine test again then fine, if not then they would presume all is fine. I can choose to be tested privately though. I've just briefly looked at the GBSS website and the private tests involve a home test and you have to swab yourself. Has anyone done it? Is it hard?! My worry is that by doing it myself I won't get an accurate result, or I won't believe that it is! I have a little while to decide, I'm 28 weeks now and tests have to be done between 35-37 weeks.

I think self-swabbing is often used even when testing it is offered in a clinic setting. So it should be fine :)

Oh really?! Is it easy though?! How do you know if you've done it properly?!

GBSS website also lists clinics that will do test. Planning on going into Wimpole Street on next week. Think was £59 or something so not extortionate and walk in rather than book appt.

I've done it both pregnancies after a friend had a baby affected by GBS. It's v easy to do yourself, but my MW said she'd take the swabs if I wanted (erm, no thanks, spare myself one indignity). Test results were back quickly and set my mind at rest. I think everyone should at least be made aware the tests are available even if NHS won't fund them.

Is your midwife definitely right? Here once you test positive it is assumed you carry it in subsequent pregnancies and you are treated as if you are positive. it may be worth checking with the hospital before you pay for a private test
