Are these braxton hicks?

The last couple of days i have had period type pains on and off, and lower back ache, i am 24 weeks with 2nd baby, will these be braxton hicks so early? is it normal if so?

Didn't have braxton hicks at all with my dd, so these feels quite strange, they are just like a dull aching.

TIA for replies Smile

it is possible to have BH this early although uncommon - Trust your instincts, if you are worried go and see your midwife. Hope everything is okay. Smile

i've had those kind of pains on and off since about 25 weeks (now 35) and they are at times very painful. at first they made me panic but now just think they are braxton hicks. also never had them in my first pregnancy. i'd contact the midwife if you are unsure.

pucca · 01/05/2006 19:24

The thing is they don't come and go, its a constant period type pain, i wouldn't say they were like contractions, its just a dull ache in lower back and lower stomach.

Contact labour ward if your worried, they may put you on the monitor ans see if they are regular. I had these off and on from 20 weeks and some were quite strong, ring if your worried.

Pucca, I've had similar experiences and all is well (but get checked-out for peace of mind). I'm 37 weeks with 3rd baby and each pg so far I've felt braxton hicks (intensifying dramatically over the weeks)from around 16 weeks, and had bouts of painful and constant period-like pain and lower backache from around 28/30 weeks. I've been convinced I'm in early labour many times! My last two babes were born full-term, swiftly without complication and everything is as it should be with this one. Hope this helps.
Schmoo :)
PS I'm a mumsnet/chatroom virgin ... can't understand all the abbreviations..... is there a reference list somewhere for dorks like me?

how are you today pucca? any more pains?

mythumbelinas · 02/05/2006 12:22

I thought braxton hicks were when your belly goes hard. I used to get those and wasn't sure, but during an appt with my midewife, it went hard and she confirmed that was braxton hicks.
No pain or dull aching tho.

Thanks for all the replies.

I ended up going in the hospital to be checked over as pains got pretty bad, my temp was up as was my pulse and they kept me in, they took some swabs of my cervix (which was lovely!) and bloods, the bloods came back as i have an infection somewhere so got to wait for swab and urine results to come back, have felt not too bad today, they were going to keep me in but i persuaded them to let me home, just got to wait for results now.

Thanks again, Smile

When i was pg with ds2 i started getting bh from about 26wks and i can remember them being so intense i thought i was in labour so i had a bath to try and relieve the pain but they got alot worst so i was convinced i was in labourGrin, but when i finally managed to get out of the bath, i relaxed on the sofa and things started to slow down. (ds2 made an apperance[sp?] 14 weeks later, just missing his due date by 1 hour!Grin)
Hopefully your lo can hang on for a few more months, but if you are worried at all, just ring your doctor/midwife/delivery suit and they can advice you to the best they can!Smile
