Sudden watery diarrhoea in early pregnancy - do I worry?

5 weeks and just been this evening hit with horrible cramps and squits :(

I can't think of anything dodgy I've eaten, and all the stomach bugs that are doing the rounds start with vomitting..

Anyway - do I worry about the baby, or just try to survive the night (with the toddler who doesnt sleep)

Just try to survive - it's probably a bug (there are all sorts doing the rounds), and I hope the non-sleeping toddler doesn't get it next.

Just keep drinking plenty of water, the only danger to baby would be dehydration.

hope you are feeling much better soon :)

Thanks for the replies.

I also really really hope The Toddler Who Doesn't Sleep doesn't get it! Can't imagine dealing with morning sickness, a genuine sickness bug AND a sick child.

What fun that would be Hmm

This happened to me twice early in the second trimester. Both times no sickness bug and I'd not eaten anything suspect. Asked MW who said not to worry - sometimes hormones can do this. Hope you're feeling better.

Hope you feel better soon, it does sound like a bug and not all make you vomit.

I was badly constipated the other week and ate 3 weetabix ... Had horrendous cramping and pain all night but I managed to have a very good clear out lol!

I had this so don't worry. it's kind of like morning sickness I think. just the imbalance of hormones. just had my first scan and everything looks perfect.

I had a few days of upset stomachs in the first trimester - have you eaten anything oily or spicy? That always triggered mine (and this is a person who pre pregnancy put chilli flakes in absolutely everything). Drink plenty of water and if you feel weak you could try eating some glucose tablets or a glucose drink.

I had a terrible d and v big at six weeks, couldn't keep anything down or in. Felt so ill I thought I'd be sure to lose the baby with all that cramping in the nether regions. I didn't.

I had diarrhea for nearly a week around wk7. I think it was a version of morning sickness (as I hadn't eaten anything out of the ordinary and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a bug). I remember one particularly grim night when I had to get up 6 times with attacks of the runs. Grim. I survived by eating super simple food (toast, crackers, etc) and drinking fluids (inc. rehydration sachets from boots) and it passed soon enough, not to return (although I did continue to feel pukey until about 14 wks). Midwife said not to worry so long as I wasn't getting dehydrated.

I had just "d" a couple of time around the time you are no other symptoms, just chalked it down to the hormones.
Now i have the opposite!

I'm currently 6 weeks, and had bad D at just over 4 weeks. I was told to drink lucozade or a rehydration drink as well as lots of water, as the main concern is dehydration and loss of salts/electrolytes. However they said the risk of infection to baby is quite rare. Hope you feel better soon.

I also had several bouts of this in my first and early second trimester. It usually came with particularly bad nausea. A couple of times I was woken in the night with it. I also worried it was norovirus but no one else was affected in our home so ruled that out. It really worried me too because last year I had two miscarriages. I'm now 30 weeks + pregnant and so far so good pregnancy wise. With retrospect the diarrhoea was a good sign, my hormones were obviously doing their thing. I had very few pregnancy symptoms at all when I had my miscarriages. So as nasty as those pregnancy symptoms are, it's usually a sign that things are going well. The more symptoms you have, the better. Mention it to your doctor / midwife next time you see them. Make sure to stay hydrated. My pharmacy had rehydration drinks that are safe for pregnant women. Always double check with them what you are going to take. Best of luck getting through the first few months. It's not easy when you have a toddler and you feel really ill. I had morning sickness with episodes of diarrhoea until week 20ish.

I meant to say... I alternated between explosive diarrhoea and constipation a lot. My midwife recommended fibre supplements. Although my tummy still isn't 100% the fibre supplements really help me. I started them mid second trimester. I'm also taking an acidophilus supplement. I also got bad cramping like I was about to have diarrhoea but nothing would come and the pain would subside.
