15 weeks pg and bought a limeade drink from m&s. Was thirsty so gulped it down when I looked at the ingredients it listed unpasterised lime juice been worried all last night. Dh said not to worry as its just like eating a lime or squeezing the juice on food but google says otherwise. Worried I've caused harm to baby.

you'll be fine. Relax

dimsum123 · 24/02/2013 11:35

Fgs it's fine. Stop worrying and stop googling.

What bugs could possibly live in lime juice?
I think you are over thinking this one!

Bejeena · 24/02/2013 11:37

I thought pasteurising was a process for dairy products only. I cannot see how you can pasteurise lime juice! So personally I wouldn't worry. Better to drink natural juices than the concentrate rubbish that is processed anyway Grin

Really? Thank you all...i didnt know about lime juice being pasterised or not!

I drank that stuff all the time whilst pg. Never gave it a second thought. You'll be fine op.

I'm a midwife and I've never heard of un pasteurised lime juice been a problem. Actually I had no idea lime juice could be pasteurised or unpasteurised.....but it's not something we tell women to avoid in pregnancy like unpasteurised cheese. Something been unpasteurised isn't a problem unless its something which may have bugs in it like soft cheese having listeria.

bakingaddict · 24/02/2013 11:56

Of course you can pasteurise juice, how do you think it has such a long shelf life. Without pasteurisation a lot of fruit juices would be rancid in weeks rather than the months you can store them unopened. It's just a process that involves heating to 121oC to destroy any bacteria in the product. Most juices also have the oxygen removed from them as well to stop bacterial growth

While there is less dangerous pathogens in lime juice such as E.coli, Listeria, Campylobacter there will still be common bacteria which are everywhere such as penicillin molds, fungal spores, Streptococcus, Stapyhloccoccus etc etc which can live in lime juice.

It just means its fresh juice, like squeezing a lime.

Bejeena · 24/02/2013 21:18

Hmmm well it shows how much I know, I had assumed that juices get
their long shelf lives by having preservatives added to them, not
through process of pasteurisation. So if they do that then why are they also loaded with chemicals I wonder?

PumpkinAndHoneyBunny · 25/02/2013 08:32

bejeena me too, but thank you all for the reassurance. You get it drilled into you during pregnancy to avoid unpatserised so paniced when I saw it on the label, but feel better now!
