Lifting heavy things?

I'm 27 weeks and have just carried DS from my bed to his. He probably weighs 55-60 lbs? It was a bit of a struggle (haven't been feeling well lately, plus he was sleeping so absolute dead weight) and now I have a low cramp on one side of my stomach.

It's not anything to worry about, is it??

Hi cheerful, i dont have an absolute answer but if you didn't have any sudden pain whilst carrying then i wouldn't think it means anything. Hopefully someone wiser will answer soon Smile

You've probably just strained a muscle but I know any ache or pain can be worrying

I worked a physical job and medical opinion was if you are used to lifting then it's ok to carry on

The majority of people in 2nd pregnancies carry on lifting their older child

Keep a check on your baby's movements and if you are still worried then you can contact your midwife for a check up

Hi, sorry you're worried. I'm not very knowledgeable about this but I definitely felt a similar thing after lifting a bit earlier on (now 23weeks) and all is well. I assume you can just strain muscles in pregnancy too? Perhaps if the pain continues or gets worse, make a call and get yourself checked to put your mind at rest.

I think the risks of lifting arepre that you've got all those hormones swimming around your body loosening up your muscles to make room for the baby. So the risk is you might strain something. Which it sounds like you have. Take it easy today and give your mw a call if you're worried.

For what it's worth I'm 17 weeks and still lugging my normal weight postbag around on delivery. I have however pulled a muscle in my stomach with a pesky cough

I carried DS1 through most of my pregnancy, and if your used to it, it should be fine.
Agree with keeping an eye on baby's movements for the next couple of days.

However, having converted lb to kg (27kg), I'm guessing your oldest is quite a bit older than mine was. I'd minimise the carrying as far as possible. At work I wouldn't be allowed to lift that on my own. Completely understand that there are times when you need to carry a child, but I'm guessing he's 6 or 7? Could you not have woken him?
Or slept in his bed for the night?

Think I'd try and find other ways round lifting him if possible, but don't think you'll have done any damage.

Thanks everyone, I will just keep an eye on things. Still a bit pained and worried but Baby seems as active as usual.

NextPhase no, will definitely not be lifting him again! He is five and a half but big for his age.

I'm 24 weeks tomorrow and have been lugging furniture around quite a bit this week and have felt the strain after like a pulled muscle. I'm not concerned as can still feel him moving and the pain hasn't stayed. If you stay in pain then maybe call to put your mind at rest but I do know it's easy for us to pull things in pregnancy due to the hormones.

My personal opinion is that it's more a risk to yourself than baby.
All your ligaments are softer preparing for the birth.
I work as a nurse and whilst lifting is not allowed, it's called moving and handling, I was still turning patients, using hoists, assisting them to walk, pushing beds around...all until I discovered I developed a vaginal prolapse..I've not given birth yet and aged 32 is not something I want to have!
