Wrist agony

sundaesundae · 21/02/2013 22:58

I have had pain in my left wrist since about 24 weeks, now nearly 36 weeks and I have it both sides. I don't think it is carpal tunnel as the pain is so focused, base of thumb area on both sides. It is getting worse and I can't turn my wrists over without crying in pain.

Can someone reassure me that this is normal and will go away once baby is here? I just threw up it hurt so much when I turned my wrist over. I've got tubigrips on them, I have a wrist brace, but don't really want to wear braces on both sides as I would be so debilitated.

AAAArgh.

I had the same thing in my left wrist from about 30 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately it hasn't gone away and DD is now 9 months old Sad. I've just got used to the pain and ignore it most of the time.

Not helpful at all - I hope your wrists get better Thanks.

Oh shit balls. Poor you. I am concerned it isn't going to go away. I hope it eases for you. At least I don't feel quite so alone with it. Thank you :)

Does this ring a bell? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Quervain_syndrome

I had it when DS1 was about 3 or 4 months (as in he'd already been born, not while pregnant). Hurt like hell but went away on its own.

I can sympathise as I have the same! It is very painful, only in my left wrist though. It started with waking in the night with numb hands and as progressed to a swollen wrist and pain. I assumed it was carpal tunnel. My midwife said this was common in pregnancy due to increased fluid in the body and sleeping mainly on my left side. Fingers crossed it will go once baby is born.

It is more like the De Quervain I think than carpal tunnel, the pain is constant and my hands aren't swollen. I don't understand how I have developed what is known as Mother's thumb, as I haven't been repeatedly lifting like you do a baby.

Really struggling with gripping and raising myself up as I have to use my hands to a certain extent being 36 weeks pregnant!

Sorry Bionic, hope yours goes soon too!!

It's De Quervain.

I got it when pregnant and finally got it sorted when DS was 18 months old. I had to have 2 injections of steroids -a year apart as it did come back after 6 months off - on the wrist ligament (hurted like hell but did the trick). I have now been without it for nearly a year (touching wood)

Speak to your GP and if they can't treat it now, nag ask after the birth.

I had De Quervain too. GP referred me for a steroid jab. Did the trick.

I got this when my DS was about 6 weeks (think it was the pinching movement used to pick him up, and he needed a lot of picking up) my DH had to take a few days off work, as I literally couldn't do anything with it (it was my right wrist and I'm right handed). Took weeks to fully go away, and I've had it a further twice since then, it takes longer to clear up each time.

You can get exercises for it so a referral to a physio from your GP is worth (post pregnancy anyway).

I also found a firm wrist support really really helpful, I got one that immobilised my thumb when it happened the last time (rather than just a wrap around support) and it made a big difference in speeding up recovery.

This is the one I got: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0017YCXK8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has a metal spine down the thumb section to keep it in a good position, stops you accidentally moving it and causing pain. But I'd definitely see your GP and see if you can get a referral to physio.
