Kamillosan - does it toughen up breasts for feeding?

I've been told to use kamillosan sore nipple cream to help prepare me for breast feeding. Am 6 1/2 months pregnant with second baby and had a nightmare feeding DS.
Does anyone know if this cream works on toughening up nipples for feeding? I'm so determined to breast feed this time round but petrified when I remember how painful it was previously.

If your nipples are sore during breastfeeding it usually means that something is going wrong with the feeding rather than your nipples not being tough enough. Bfing usually has a painful bit right at the start of the feed, but the rest of the feed should be painless. If it isn't painless, you should take your baby off (use your little finger to break the latch) and start again.

If your nipples get sore from breastfeeding, then Lansinoh can help them recover between feeds.

I wouldn't try toughening up your nipples beforehand, (Confused) that just sounds unnecessarily painful.

What noblegiraffe said.

Buy a large tube of lansinoh. Very very good stuff.

Nope, you don't need to 'toughen up' or 'soften' (have heard both) your nipples for breastfeeding. They only need cream like Lansinoh if they get sore. And if they get sore, there is normally an underlying feeding problem.

You're better bet it to find some real life support ready for this time round. Hope it goes better for you.

If you had felt or seem Kamillosan I doubt you would want to put it anywhere near your breasts, it is the yuckiest cream I have come across.

Lansinoh and good latch advice is your friend.

You're right about it being a smelly cream, and it stains too! My partner came into the room when I'd just opened the tube and said eww what's that smell?
I think you're all right about latching on properly. Ill make sure the midwives have time to show me properly this time round. I'm going birth in a birthing centre as opposed to hospital. When DS was born midwives were so busy they didn't have time to show me so I suffered and then my nipples were bleeding and my breasts felt like they were in fire. Feeding DS was like needles shooting through my breast. I'm hoping birth centre will have more dedicated staff not so busy who'll take time to show me.Smile

Also might be a good idea to get the helpline numbers (NCT/ ABM / LLL etc) printed off incase you need them, so that you don't have to root round and find them when you need them :)
