Yes of course! Just let them know when you book.

Dental treatment is free when pregnant too on the NHS (just need your maternity prescription card).

As a dentist, I want to ask a genuine question. Why are you happy to have a rotten tooth in your mouth? They are full of really badly smelling bacteria. I'm just curious, is it because you're scared? Or the NHS extraction fee is too expensive? Or another reason.

MisselthwaiteManor · 19/02/2013 14:19

Yes and it's free, you can take cocodamol for the pain as well.

bonzo77 · 19/02/2013 14:28

Yes, no problem. Get it sorted now before baby comes and you don't have time. Or maybe see if it can be saved.

Oh, and mrs morton my experience of patients is that none of them want a rotten tooth full of smelly bacteria in their mouth. They face classic barriers to seeking care: cost, fear, lack of perceived need, embarrassment. As NHS dentists it is our duty, and well within our powers, to address these. Direct questioning / probing on these issues, early on in the patient- dentist relationship can come across judgemental and therefore further hinder things.

In reply to Mrs Morton I've got 4 teeth that need to come out, I grit my teeth really hard when I'm asleep which has caused them to crack and get infected, 3 of them are now dead with no pain but after an awful experience at a dentist when she made me sit on my hands while trying to remove a tooth with an abscess underneath that wouldn't numb I was scared to go back, it has now turned into embarrassment because of needing so much treatment, luckily it's my back teeth so nobody can tell when I smile.

MrsMorton · 19/02/2013 15:17

Thanks dogsmom that's interesting. Hopefully you now have the impetus you need and will get things sorted and (crucially) not pass on your fear to your child.

Thanks bonzo I'm not an NHS dentist btw.

Is it safe to have fillings and dental work done when pg? I've just been told that I need a filling.
Also, maybe the OP was using 'rotten' as an expression?
