Prescribed 75mg aspirin from 12 weeks, not entirely comfortable taking it

Hi all. At my first consultant appointment at 5 weeks I was told that as a type 1 diabetic I should take this low dose aspirin daily from 12 weeks without much explanation (that I understood, anyway!). Well 12 weeks is here and I just feel v uncomfortable with the thought of taking it.

I posted a message in the T1diabetic pregnancy thread and some of the ladies had been told to take it and some hadn't. From what I now understand it aids blood flow to the placenta and can reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia.

So there are sound reasons for taking, it seems to be standard in NHS guidelines in diabetic pregnancy but I'm still uncertain about it. Not helpd by the fact I have OCD and anxiety around fear of contaminating/damaging the baby.

If anyone could let me know their experiences of taking 75mg of aspirin in pregnancy I think it might help. Thanks x

Hey, don’t worry I totally understand. I have OCD and it got exacerbated during pregnancy. Although mine encompasses every worry under the sun, not just contaminants :-/ and I understand the shame etc in trying to explain yourself to professionals and still be taken seriously when they know you have OCD. I avoided taking aspirin for that very reason but I’ve now been convinced of the benefits and believe they outweigh anything else - low dose does not cause any birth defects or issues.

OP's baby is about four now.

I’ve been taking 150mg daily since just after 12 weeks and have had no ill effects at all. Recent studies have shown its excellent for reducing the risk of pre-eclampsia.
I’ve been having regular scans and am now 23 weeks and all is well. Just a few aches and pains from old endometriosis scars, nothing to do with the aspirin obviously.

I'm on 150mg baby asprin daily.

It's to aid blood flow. I'm an older (40) mum had a couple of pregnancies previously which ended in mc. Apparently blood flow to the placenta can break down in older mums.

I've noticed no effects from it and this is the furthest I've got.

I took it all the way up to 36 weeks :) I was fine. At least I am so far!

How many weeks are you now zaalitje?

I took 75ng aspirin from 12 weeks as my mum had preeclampsia.
I ended up getting preeclampsia, hospitalised at 31 weeks and had to have steroids as blood pressure was through the roof. BUT I made it to term (37+4) before being induced, and I like to think the aspirin helped me last longer and avoid a preteen birth.
My lovely 2 year old is bright as a button.
If I were you I’d take it. The risks of preeclampsia far outweigh taking a medication that doesn’t cross the placenta xx
