How many movements or kicks per day is normal?

I'm 26 weeks and have been feeling strong kicks for a while now with a posterior placenta and some days he's a right little wriggler and doesn't seem to stop. But other days it feels like I go hours and hours without feeling anything and get the odd few kicks in between. Obviously I'm a first time mum and just wondering what's normal and when to be worried ect? Thanks

No such thing as normal. Only what is normal for you. And that might change a little as your pregnancy progresses. Usual pattern is that you notice very little while you are active then lots more movement when you are resting. If you are ever worried have a cold sugary drink then lie on the floor for half an hour. If you are still even slightly worried go straight to labour ward or maternity triage.

I'd echo what bonzo said. I'm 31 weeks now and I've had two episodes of not feeling LO, one at 25 weeks and one at 29.

I'd done the cold drink thing, laying down etc and still had't felt baby in 24 hours so I called antenatal triage. They told me to come straight in where they put me on a trace machine and listened to baby's heart beat for ages. Everything was fine and of course when we got home baby was having a party and I could feel her moving loads. It was very reassuring and the MWs said to come in if worried.

Try to get a sense of what's normal for you and if you're concerned do get checked.

Hi, I'm 38+4. Was in getting monitored today for reduced movements, all ok thankfully.

just to say I was advised the following if I thought movements had reduced again.

Lie on left side, with no other distractions (i.e. no TV) and count movements over 2 hour period. The minimum movements they look for is 10 "kicks" in this time (these 10 movements may occur over the 2 hours or in first half hour). If less than 10 get checked.

Hope this makes sense!

Try the count the kicks website for advice. I (at 30 weeks) know my baby's pattern fairly well, give or take my activity. Mine is definitely more active after I've eaten and when I've had caffiene so I do as Cackle was advised if baby seems quiet - lie still for an hour after a snack/cold drink and see if I can count 10 kicks in that time.

As the others have said, there's no definitive 'normal'. They used to say 10 movements a day but that advice has changed.

I'm on my second and my DS moved very little. I would be waiting hours sometimes and then would maybe get 3 or 4 movements then nothing for several more hours. I went in for monitoring twice due to lack of movement and the second time they scanned me to see if the placenta was working properly as I'd reached term. This little madam is incredibly wriggly most days. I can't believe the difference! Even so she still has her quiet days.

You'll get a feel for what's normal for this pregnancy. Use a kick counter if you're worried and always get checked out if there's a reduction in fetal movement. They told me never to worry about wasting their time and that they'd much rather send a reassured mum with a healthy baby home after some monitoring than miss any problems.

Sorry for long post!

i have twice been in with reduced movements. 34 weeks now. both times on heart trace i heard babies kicks but didnt feel them. your baby could be turning and kicking into your back. i feel my baby move a couple of times in the morn 7ish wen i get up and then nothing till 8pm when i sit down. its easy to be distracted in the day when you are busy. any time you are worried just ring the ward and dont feel nuerotic i went in every week with my 1st over something.
