Waxing while pregnant

Hello! I have no idea if anyone will respond to this, and I'm aware that this subject has come up on Mumsnet before... but: I have my regular monthly waxing appointment today, and I get everything (Hollywood, legs, arms) done. Been doing this for yonks. However, just found out I'm pregnant, like literally a few weeks ago and I'm only 6 weeks gone. I never even thought that waxing would be any sort of risk, but since I can't ask any friends (we're keeping schtum until 12 week scan) the thought has just passed my mind! Surely, it's okay, right, to go ahead with my waxing this afternoon?
Help! I only have a few hours before my appointment!

Yes waxing is fine. If I were you though I would see how you feel before you get the whole lot done because some women find they're a lot more sensitive to the pain when pregnant.

I had a massive, full on, bent over on my knees wax at 37 weeks because I couldn't shave (too massive) and I was expecting to have people looking between my legs frequently. It was fine.

And I had an emergency c-section - waste of effing time and effort. DC2 had a big afro but didn't give a bush.

Thanks! Rationally I can't help but think I'm being silly to doubt that anything might go wrong as a result, but you know what it's like once you start Googling... I will see how it goes today - I don't even know whether I should mention I'm pregnant to the therapist, seeing as it's so early? would you (technically I'm really only 5 and a half weeks pregnant, according to my GP yesterday, but I tell myself I'm entering my sixth week to make the unbearably long time until the 12th week scan pass sooner...)?

Thanks YesAnastasia - so you don't think that just because it's first trimester I should cancel or anything?

Its completely fine in first trimester. Just make sure you let the therapist know as she may use a different wax. Just be prepared for it to hurt a lot more!!!

growyourown77 · 13/02/2013 16:54

Ouch, ouch ouch...I tried once then gave up until after. The razor and trimmer are your friends!

BraveLilBear · 13/02/2013 17:00

Definitely let the therapist know. She should keep it schtum as she's a professional.

Also, as a slight word of warning, pregnant women are evidently much more prone to trapped hair follicles/ingrowing hairs down there due to extra blood flow to the region, so make sure you do whatever you can to reduce this.

Having experienced a perianal abscess thought to have been caused by a trapped hair not brought on by shaving or waxing (had just been trimming as it was winter), it's something you definitely wouldn't want to go through ever, let alone while pregnant.

As your skin is used to it, you may have better resistance, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

if the wax feels like its burning, tell thm. i had little burns from ax when pregnant, skin mustbe more sensitive

expectingwriter · 13/02/2013 17:24

My skin was a lot more sensitive last time. I went for a brow wax at 7wks and it took half my skin off... Are you going for a bikini? Confused

Maybe ask for a patch test as you are pg first. Just in case your skin does what mine did and half your fanjo comes off :)

InNeedofSomeSleep · 13/02/2013 19:26

You should mention it coz your skin is alot more sensitive when pregnant and the wax can remove the skin leaving lots of red blisters which is not nice. I wax and found the skin on my face was very sensitive and it actually pulled my skin off my upper lip, looked like a had a hitler moustache coz of the scab. The joys of being dark haired!!

expectingwriter · 14/02/2013 08:34

Okay, I can confirm it was all totally fine - no more sensitive than usual :)

I found it fine until the middle of the second trimester, but do be careful if you end up like me with swollen veins down there - I didn't discover them until the unbelievable pain came mid-wax! I am still waxing my legs, but find that I bruise more easily, so no longer do underarms either...
