Currently 24 weeks pregnant and need some dental work. Dentist said its safe to have an X-ray but not sure.
Has anyone had one in pregnancy? Are they safe?

I was told by my dentist that its dangerous to have X-ray until after baby is born

NHS guidance: www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/2294.aspx?CategoryID=69&SubCategoryID=697

Depends how urgent the dental treatment is, I guess.

That website doesn't sound good. I had one at 20 weeks....

Can you ask your dentist to put one of those lead vests on you? I had to have an x-ray on my finger when I was ttc and they put one on me just as a precaution.

That's fantastic guys! Thank you. I've got a dentist appointment tomorrow x

As a radiographer I would be more than happy to have a dental x-ray, the dose is very , very low and targeted. Having said that I wouldn't be going for routine dental xrays or OPG xrays (where it moves round your head) as these are not necessary whilst pregnant. If they want to do an xray to look for something specific I would be happy.

Ask them to give you a lead apron to wear and to only do the xrays needed for your immediate treatment.

It's so reassuring getting advice from a radiographer! Thank you so very very much Smile

Had my dentist appointment this morning. Had X-ray and requested metal apron which was really heavy. Feeling a strange sense of guilt now, and don't know why? Feeling my little one kick away which is making me feel a bit better.

You have no reason to worry at all sweetheart, no xrays went anywhere near your precious little one. The aprons are very heavy, but it blocks all the xrays so worth it :)

Thank you sundaesundae Smile
Have had a restful day, I try not to do anything when I've had a dentist appointment which involves numbing my gum. I've found that I feel very dizzy and tired afterwards. Been to the dentist 5 times in the last two weeks lol. Veneer kept coming off.

Dentist here. I would avoid routine ones, but the odd one while treating a problem is virtually no risk. Correctly aimed dental X-rays go nowhere near the baby. And modern equipment delivers a very low dose. You get a far higher dose of radiation on a short aeroplane trip.
