Please help ladies - been struggling with a really rotten virus / bad cold for a few days now. Nose is clogged up, head splitting, shivery all over and worst bit is the really phlegmy, nasty, persistent cough.

I have hyperemesis and although the meds I am taking do help with the vomiting, all the coughing is making me wretch and wretch and I've been having a really hard time sleeping or keeping anything down.

So I feel like I really need to take SOMETHING!! But everything seems to be not recommended in pregnancy - any ideas? Anyone know anything I can take safely to stop the coughing?

Thanks xx

Sorry you're feeling so poorly. It does get better.
Have you tried steam? I had bronchitis when I was pregnant and the GP recommended a vaporiser with menthol capsules.
Lots of hot drinks too if you can stomach them.
Hope you feel better soon.

Honey and lemon are your only real options. It does work well, hot drinks in general seem to help with coughs.

LittleMissSnowShine · 11/02/2013 17:33

Thanks ladies Thanks

I'm going crazy for the hot lemon and honey at the min, it's good for warming you up but it's not doing anything for this cough unfortunately and it's the cough that has me climbing the walls!! Was up for 2 hours in the middle of the night coughing...and puking! Nice Wink

I took 'Vicks honey cough syrup' which the pharmacist said was fine to take in pregnancy.

Coughs need to come up, last time I have bronchitis and was so poorly DH had to take leave from work. Honey and lemon and paracetamol. Olbas oil also helped and sleeping upright.

Hipe you feel better soon

You can take the glycerine stuff over the counter.

Otherwise, my doc has given me codine lintus in the past.

Hey LittleMiss :)

Ok, I get a lot of mucus due to asthma, these things have all worked for me in the past. The thing with mucus is, it's going to come up. Some things just make it come up quicker.

First of all, if you can, drop all dairy from your diet. Makes you produce more mucus. Just for a couple of days.

Drop the honey from your drink, and try lemon juice alone in hot water. Honey coats your throat (hence is soothing to a sore throat) but that's not what you want if you're all clagged up.

A saltwater gargle (obv don't swallow) will clear your upper throat as it cuts the mucus, much like lemon.

To shift the deeper mucus, you need steam. A hot shower is a good start: just sit in there for ages, as much steam as possible, and bring up what you can. If that's not possible (hg is making me hate showers ATM), hunch over a bowl of steaming water with a towel if needed. You can add a teaspoon of Vicks, a few drops of olbas oil, or lemon oil, or eucalyptus. Some people swear by oil of oregano but I detest the smell. Only do this if the smell won't make you sick.

When I don't have hg, once I've steamed, I lay on the bed with my head and top half just slightly hanging over the edge, and get dh to vigorously bang me on the back for a while. Doing this after a steam and an apple cider vinegar gargle usually brings it up in great globs. You may not fancy this while a. Pregnant and b. got hg, however (you couldn't pay me to do it now) :) However, your dp could bang you on the back a bit (think the chop chop motion of a massage rather than help I'm choking) while you were sitting up?

I have yet to find a solution to mucus which didn't involve the nasty bit of it all coming up. I'm sorry: I wish I knew one and hopefully someone brainier than me will come along :)

I got a Boots own brand cough syrup recently which specifically says on the label that it's safe for pregnant ladies to take. It helped a lot. Good luck!

LittleMissSnowShine · 12/02/2013 09:28

Oh didnt know that about Boots, must call in there this morning, so fed up feeling like this!

Cider vinegar..ack!! Might give it a try tho if this goes on lol

Simple cough linctus is fine.
You can't use olbas oil but you can use karvol. Lots of fluids I find hot ribena good
I had hg with flu over Xmas and it was horrible.
Hope you feeling better soon Thanks

Jenny123G · 12/02/2013 14:11

I have the same thing except I'm 39+2 been the docs today and been told its bronchitis, he gave me amoxicillin to clear it up before ( hopefully before ) birth! If you're feeling as rotten as me get yourself to the docs they'll guide you or give you the best remedy for you x

LittleMissSnowShine · 12/02/2013 16:03

I was thinking about drs, taking DS on Thurs morning anyway so they might sort me out with an antibiotic if cough is still bad - already taking anti nausea meds for HG tho so hate taking anything else on top of that. But if I need to I will Confused

Nipped into Boots earlier and got the honey and lemon glycerine - it's not stopping the cough exactly but it's maybe making it a bit less annoying so that's a good start! Karvol and hot ribena also on the list for this evening Grin

Fun stuff this pregnancy in the cold season!!!
