Genital herpes in first trimester

Have just been diagnosed with herpes and have had the worst 2 weeks of the most horrible symptoms that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. The blisters have healed now but the pain in my fanjo and legs/buttocks has not subsided nor has the flu like feeling or razors when peeing. My partner has never had symptoms and the GUM clinic say he will have 'asymptomatic shedding' which unfortunately has caused me to get it.
I have now read that it is dangerous for the baby if you have your first outbreak when in the first trimester and I am now very worried that I may either miscarry or give my baby brain damage or another complication.

I know that if I have another outbreak nearer to labour I will be given a c section but will they know if there is any damage to the baby prior to birth? or is there anything at all I can do? I feel so bad that I have not been able to protect my baby.

www.rcog.org.uk/genital-herpes-pregnancy-information-for-you

Hopefully that's a link to a patient info leaflet on the RCOG website about herpes in pregnancy!

Hope that helps

Hi. I'm afraid I can't help you with the pregnancy info but just wanted to add a comment.
I got genital herpes about 8 years ago after, very stupidly, having unprotected sex on a one night stand. What a shock I got!
It was the worst thing I've ever been through. I found that peeing in the shower helped relieve the pain a bit and drinking loads of water so it's more diluted when you pee.
I've had a few episodes since but very mild, my pregnancy with dd 3 years ago was fine but I did get them after the birth which added to the general soreness down below. I'm pg again and have my fingers crossed all will be straightforward.
I really hope you and your baby get through this safe and sound.
Lots of luck x

Thanks for the info SoYo

Betty thanks, it really is the worst isn't it? I'm glad it didn't impact your pregnancy with your dd. Didn't think about getting an outbreak after the birth but then I guess you are more run down and susceptible then. Hope all goes well for you this time too x

Thanks. Really hope it all goes well. It's tough as it's not something you can really complain about, like a bad back.
Take care x
