What can I take as I have a cold?

Hi

Can't believe it OH is treating me to a lovely weekend away this weekend and I started to come down with a cold!!!

Throat is like I've swallowed razor blades, congestion is on its way and the glands in my throat are really swollen.

When I get colds it's always head colds bad congestion that makes my ears and teeth hurt.

I'm 31 weeks pregnant apart from honey and lemon is there anything else I can take?

paracetamol is your only option I'm afraid, along with vapour rub/albas oil if you are snotty

Karvol will help congestion.
A hot bath
Paracetamol every 4 hours, full dose.
Also try menthol crystals in a bowl of water and inhale the steam.
Lots of fluids to keep you hydrated

Sterimar saline nasal spray is safe and v good for congestion. Boots sell it.

A neti pot to aid with the congestion / clearing out the sinuses. I've been using one for the past 3 days and it's quite nice. I was expecting it might be unpleasant but it's not bad actually.

Saline nasal spray/drops. You can make this yourself (500ml of water, 1tsp of non iodised salt) rather than forking out £4 for a bottle of saline! Just make sure you boil the water first. I just made some myself and added some essential oil drops (one drop each of camomile, lavender, tea tree & kids' olbas oil) and it's actually made my nose less stuffy!

I'm also using Boots nasal spray at night (one spray for each nostril - the effect lasts for pretty much the whole night). It's not recommended in pregnancy but I've read up on it a lot and the general consensus seems that you should avoid excessive or prolonged use, but using it a few times over the course of 3-4 days should be OK. I think this is a decision you have to make for yourself though!

Olbas oil and vicks are not recommended in pregnancy (have checked websites after reading it here and yes it does state it!) I cannot imagine why though Confused I have to admit I would still use them if it was bad enough and plain old steam baths weren't working.
Just thought I would post to make others aware.
