Likelihood of second breech baby?

Hi all,

I am 30 weeks pregnant with second baby. DD was breech from around 20 weeks until delivery by ELCS at 39+2 (she even engaged butt-down). I did prenatal yoga/sleeping on left-side/ECV etc to try and get her to turn, but no joy - she was happy out where she was and not for turning! Anyway, this baba is in EXACTLY the same position as she was, since the 20 week scan, and I have not felt a single movement above my belly button. I'm not too worried about the idea of a second CS, I'll go for VBAC if babs flips, but all that matters is that it arrives safely.

However, I have a couple of questions: do some babies just stay in the one position and then flip towards the end or do some women tend to have breech babies? Also, does anyone know if ECVs are attempted on women who have had previous CS? I really did not enjoy that experience first time around, so will have to seriously consider whether I'd do it again - is it easier on a second pregnancy to turn babies as there is less muscle tone?

Thanks all!

oh crumbs im afraid i had my breech baby in the black and white days, 26 years ago and i was allowed to just deliver her!

ds2 came along a few years later and wasnt breech, neither was ds1

perhaps not helpful and i have hips you could get a bus thru my consultant said

My first was the same, breech from around 20 weeks and stayed that way. I didn't have an ECV due to lack of fluid so just went straight for an elective section.

Hoping for a vbac but my second is in exactly the same position (22 weeks) and I have a feeling she will stay this way too!

DS1 was breech from about 26 weeks til he was turned by ECV at 37 weeks. DS2 was breech at the 20 week scan and still was at 31 week MW appt. By the 34 week appt he had turned of his own accord. Its all still to play for.

Just anecdotally, my friend's mum had 12 babies and one was born breech. My DD is head down at the moment but the MW this morning says she has moved completely from deep on right side to lovely anterior left position. Same MW says another lady she sees at same gestation (35w) has gone from head down to breech! I think babies at 30 weeks still have plenty of time to move by themselves and I don't think 1 breech = certain 2nd breech. Hope yours gets flipping soon!

With both pregnancies I have had nerve pain on the top of my bump and it feels better when I recline -- not a good position to get the baby to turn, if you

Teapot13 · 08/02/2013 12:43

Sorry, not sure how that happened. . .

. . . if you believe mother's position makes a difference. DD was breech and DC2 is at the moment -- 34+3 so time to change, but I don't mind having another ELCS for breech.

DS1 was breech the whole way through my pregnancy. We tried ECV at 37 weeks (I hated it too!) and he still wouldn't move, as his feet were stuck. FWIW, he was a big baby (4.7kg - I think that's about 10lb 3oz)

DS2 was transverse till about 30 weeks and then turned without me even realising. He was a pretty big baby too, and was born normally.

DS3 is currently also transverse (last scan was at 27 weeks) at 30 weeks, so I don't know if he's going to turn or not.

I've always been told that they won't try an ECV after you've already had a CS, as it risks rupturing the scar tissue. In any case, I hated it so much with DS1 (as did poor DH who was horrified watching it) that I would never want to try it again!

Thanks you guys, I really appreciate your taking the time to reply. It is good to hear that it was not just me that hated the ECV experience - I know it is a safe procedure but it felt so wrong to have your precious bump manhandled in such a manner (and it was fecking sore)!

I suppose I'll just have to wait and see what happens...

I have an inverted womb apparently - I wonder if that makes it more likely to have a breech baby?

My 1st was breech, wouldnt move at all ! 2ds was transverse and wouldnt move either! So after 2-CS 3ds behaved and was engaged but had planned CS because of previous 2!
The midwives had me believing i had an odd shaped womb etc until 3ds ! i think it just depends on baby xx

Well, whether ECV is safe or not is not completely uncontroversial. My consultant offered it to me but quickly said he would have to refer me to a colleague because "I don't know what I think of this turning business." I think it is very accepted in the UK but not necessarily other countries.
