Antenatal depression

9+5 with first and unplanned. I had previously suffered from depression but was down to 10mgs of Citalopram when I found out I was PG. first doctor advised me to stop taking them and I thought I was fine.

Then this week I stared getting terrible sickness and cramping and sharp pains in my hips. The doctor who examined me said there was nothing wrong and perhaps I was depressed again which was making the pain worse. Made me really worry and I'm not sure what I should do now. Any advice?

Could it be SPD?

I had it at 17 weeks and reading up on it helped. Doc didn't diagnose it, midwife did eventually

Hi Zeezee - I'm also on 10mg of Citalopram and I'm 5+3. I had a conversation with my Dr last year about my medication as my DH and I had discussed starting for a family this year. She said that obviously, because no-one in their right mind would test pregnant women and babies, there aren't any studies to show that anti depressants are harmful or vice versa.

We weighed up the pros and cons and decided that the benefits of being on them (i.e. no panic attacks, no OCD, no depression, reduced risk of post-natal depression) outweighed the possible (but unconfirmed) cons of it doing any harm to the baby. I think the only thing it would really affect is that I wouldn't be able to breastfeed as it's passed on in the milk.

I have, however, had to see other on-call Drs since then who have said differently, but currently I feel great (apart from occasional hormonal mood swings which are to be expected in most pregnancies), and the fact that I'm on such a small dose means I'm even less worried about it.

You need to do what's most comfortable for you though. Unfortunately, compared to soft cheese, raw meat, alcohol and smoking, there is no definite guidance.

Did the second Dr suggest that maybe you should go back on them?

I was taking Citalopram before getting pregnant with my DD and stopped as soon as I found out. This was a big mistake - by 12 weeks I was suicidal and went onto sertraline. I breast fed DD until she was 11 months, and took sertraline until she was 18 months. She is 7 now and seems fine :)
The psychiatrist I saw actually said it was better to bf as then they didn't suddenly stop getting the AD once they were born.

He said I should think about it and go back. No mention on SPD just arthritis, which he said I don't have.

Felt better at first because there was nothing "wrong" with me but now I'm worried. He said there were safe antidepressants for pregnancy and that lots of women take them all over the world with no side effects. But I didn't go in thinking I was depressed but now I'm worried I could be again only this time I have much more on my plate.

At my first meeting with the midwife she did tell me about things available in my area should I start feeling low again. No tablets for 6 weeks and I'd been feeling fine even discussing coming off them completely.

I suppose I just need to work out if I'm depressed or just anxious about work or just stressed planning the wedding or just run down because of not eating or sleeping properly or a combination.

Thank you though. Even when you can't get concrete answers (if I don't know nobody will) I really appreciate your replies
