Short break away around 37 weeks

Would I be mad to book a few days away with DH for our anniversary 3 weeks before dc1 is due? It will be in May so still got a few weeks to book anything.
I'm not thinking anything too far away, and staying in the uk obviously as wont be able to fly.
Maybe a cottage or nice boutique hotel. Possibly Lake District, Northumberland, maybe Cornwall. We live in midlands.
I was thinking lie ins, lazy day sitting by the pool if hotel, or in the garden if its nice reading a book. Maybe a day out to see the area, nice lunch or afternoon tea.
Will this image disappear when I feel fat, have swollen feet, the dreaded heartburn etc?
DH thinks it would be good to spend our last anniversary together just us but I'm worried that I might not feel up to it. However the thought of something to look forward to is very appealing. Especially if the hotel has a spa!! Sorry didn't mean to go on for so long. Would this be something you would consider? Any experiences? Cottage or hotel? Also any recommendations very much appreciated!!

I think it sounds lovely, but I'd either book somewhere quite close to home/hospital or research hospitals close to where you go & take your notes.
If its your 1st baby then labour is likely to take a while but could be painful travelling.

Also, is there anyone else who could go in your place if you don't want to/can't go? Or try to book somewhere that you can cancel & get a refund just in case!

At 37 weeks I would really not have wanted to go away and I would have felt guilty for not making the most of it. Giving birth early is also an issue so you'd have to take your notes and a car seat and check out hospitals etc.

Can you book something nice sooner? Obviously the weather won't be as nice, but then that's not guaranteed in May anyway.

googietheegg · 06/02/2013 19:41

I'd go now and book somewhere v close to home. Dd came a week early.

Missingthemincepies · 06/02/2013 19:42

I'd really try to go a couple of weeks earlier TBH. By 37 weeks lots of women really wouldn't enjoy a trip in the car for even an hour or 2. Also, you'll be struggling to eat a decent amount at a time due to squashed stomach so restaurant may be a waste, and some spas won't do treatments etc after 36 weeks.

I went away (2 hour drive) for spa weekend at fab hotel at 35 weeks. Was exhausted by the time I got there but was pampered and looked after v well by staff and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This pg I have spd (fine last time) since 26 weeks. Am now 30 weeks and we'd hoped to go away start of next month but now v doubtful. It's tricky to know how you will feel then but most people would be fine at 35 weeks.

If you do go at 37 weeks, remember your hospital bag, notes and the car seat!

Personally, I felt great the last weeks of pg, much better than during the second trimester which is said to be the best.
If you can find a place within a 2 hrs drive, and not too far away from a good hospital, then go!

MirandaWest · 06/02/2013 19:53

I think it's a lovely idea but be prepared for things going not to plan. I was fine until 34 weeks and then from 35 to 38 weeks was in and out of hospital due to high blood pressure with DS born at 38+3. So something you can cancel if necessary might be a good idea.

kittykatsforever · 06/02/2013 20:02

I would gave felt fine at that time and did but went into labour at exactly 37wks!
I'd maybe book sooner or do a last minute one booked the same week based on how you feel, if you do decide to go I'd definatly look into local hospitals and not book somewhere in the middle if nowhere,

Littlemissexpecting · 06/02/2013 20:37

Thanks for all your advice. I'll speak to DH. Can't really go any earlier as I don't go on mat leave till 35 weeks and DH can't get any time off work sooner. Might be worth leaving it and book last minute if I feel up to it

I've just travelled from East Midlands to Devon at 28 weeks (I'm due end of April) and it really took its toll on me physically - awful travel sickness (not usually a problem!), stopping to pee, feeling uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to travel such a distance that far along into my pregnancy as you're suggesting...no reason why you can't book something but a. Refundable! And b. I'd look a bit closer to home personally.
