Hi i am 25 weeks pregnant and had an appointment with my midwife today and was told i cant have baby at the hospital that i wanted to and now cant have a water birth because i am classed as a high risk because i have got one kidney. Do you think there is a chance they will change their minds and let me have a water birth?

I was told that I might not be able to have a water birth due to my bmi, I really really want one and was upset when they told me this, I asked my midwife and she is booking me an appt with the senior midwife, who apparently can sign you off to have one providing you understand all the risks...

My view is that I will look at the risks, obviously the health of you and the baby is the most important thing, but maybe see if there is a compromise??
I think they try to accomodate choice as far as possible but ultimately, what is important is a healthy baby and delivery, preference over how has to come second?

I feel for you, I am in a similar position and know how dissapointing it is!

I think you need to speak to the supervisor of midwives, and ask her exactly what the risks, specific to you, of having a water birth are.

Not just that you're high risk, but exactly what risks you face by having one kidney, and how a waterbirth could impact upon those risks.

You could also suggest considering a homebirth with a pool and they may then consider the hospital pool to be a good compromise Wink
