Braxton Hicks at 27 weeks - v. frequent (like nearly constant)

Have been having a lot of Braxton Hicks today - at least assuming that's what they are. Tummy feels very tight and it kind of starts at the top of my tummy and moves down. They are more or less following one after the other. Now also have slight lower back pain but that could be due to sitting badly at work!

Have just tried to call GP to get midwife's number but engaged, so in meantime just thought I'd see if anyone else has had this? Didn't really have Braxton Hicks with dd until the last week or so, so a bit worried that they are so frequent so early in pregnancy.

i had them all the time fro about 25 weeks - often found if i bent over, i couldn't stand back up again, and if i walked to quickly they got quite strong - i had to stop to huff & puff. i'd still check it out though

My best friend's just had her third and she had almost constant braxton hicks from 27 weeks.

They just told her to use paracetamol if it got too bad (didn't help though).

I am at 29 weeks and have been getting them a lot in the evenings. On one day last week they were extremely painful and frequent (lasting about one minute every five minutes, before fading away after about an hour). I saw the MW this week for a routine appointment. She said that they should not be painful and that if I get pains like that again, I should contact the hospital, just in case it's early labour.

I hope you are OK.

have a bath, drink loadsa water, rest up
if they don't stop within an hour go into hospital.

dehydration can start contractions so drink loads but preterm labour can be caused by loads of things so go in and get checked out.

heartinthecountry - i am getting them right now too. I am 33 weeks, they were coming every 5 mins yesterday and i called the maternity unit and they told me to go in and be monitored, they said it was just braxton hicks, baby was ok and my cervix was closed. so i was sent home. Had the same thing 2 weeks ago but 10 mins apart, had to go in then too.
It is worth checkng with the midwife or hospital, when do you turn 28 wks? We're not supposed to call the maternity ward before 28 wks here.
Mine are painless at the moment, i get the odd twinge in my groin, but that happens with or without a contraction so i think thats just my muscles grumbling.

Thanks for replies everyone. I managed to get through to the maternity ward who told me to come in for monitoring. Cervix was still closed and long, no contractions showing up on the monitor, BUT they told me they wanted to keep me in and give me steroids to strengthen the baby's lungs, incase I went into premature labour. Really frightened me actually. As contractions had eased off by then I said I wanted to speak to the registrar before doing anything. She told me it was precautionary. Anyway, to cut a long story short I did come home (mostly because my dd needed her epilepsy meds) with a promise to go back in if they get strong again.

Am just going to go to bed and rest a lot and hope I think.

take care and rest love. I had this with 2nd baby.

heartinthecountry · 27/04/2006 09:38

Thanks Smile - nothing last night or today so far so fingers crossed. MIL has come down to help out with dd. dh has ordered me to rest. Hoping they were just brought on by me overdoing it a bit.

I wasn't overly worried before I went to the hospital as they weren't painful just a bit uncomfortable. But talk of giving me steroid injections etc really frightened me. I think (hope) they were just being a bit over cautious.
