I'm 12 weeks and whenever I turn over in bed or get out of the car I have really bad cramps in my stomach - not period type cramps but like severe cramp in your leg but in in your stomach - Anyone else get this???
Or have a reason for that matter!!!

Could be a pubis problem?

Linnet · 16/01/2004 22:26

When I first discovered I was pregnant, now 23 weeks, I was getting cramps on my left hand side down where your appendix would be if it were on that side. I got those cramps when I stood up to quickly, or got out of bed or sometimes rolled over in bed. They've eased off now but when I'm walking to work if I hurry I get what feels like a stitch but it's not on my side it's on my stomach. I'm just putting it down to muscles stretching.

The groin/appendix area pain worried me more as I thought it might have been SPD or something but my dr has assured me that it's not. She said if it was SPD the pain would be in the middle not to the side.

Quackers me old mucker!
I got those and still do actually (at 23 wks). Midwife says its muscle/ligaments stretching as your uterus is growing at an enormous rate. Don't worry

Hope you are very well xxxxxx

Hiya, thanks all. I suspected that, as has it last time, just is so painful when turning over isn't it!!! Great to hear from you Egypt!! I must come and see you on your thread, see hoe it's going there!! Take care!

I'm 32 weeks and have got them all through this pregnancy. My midwife has told me this baby is going to be alot bigger than my first, so they must be the uterus stretching. V. painful

Moomin · 17/01/2004 15:03

I agree that this pain is probably your uterus stretching but re Linnet's doctor's comments about spd pain: IME a lot of gps aren't THAT clued in about spd, so I'd be wary of their comments if they're a bit dismissive. I had spd from 5 months and the pain was either side of my bump and I had lots of difficulty turning over in bed. Other women get back pain and/or leg pain and some do get it in the middle. But I'd say anything that is VERY painful and not just "twingey" in the 2nd or 3rd trimester is worth a second opinion.

Quackers · 17/01/2004 20:48

Thanks for that. Sorry what is SPD??? It is very painful not just twingy. I have to turn over so slowly and still get it even then! It is defo either side of my (small) bump as only 12-13 weeks but has got worse in the last couple of weeks.

Just looked on the web. Gosh it does sound a bit familiar. Getting out of a car is hell and climbing stairs gets sore after a few steps. have my booking in on Tuesday will speak to the Doc/midwife about it. aLthough there doesn't seem alot they can do!!!

It was the consultant at the hospital at my booking in appointment that I mentioned it to, not my usual gp. I still do get twingy pains in my groin area but only now and then but not to bad. I'm ok, going up stairs and turning over in bed so I'm not to worried.

Today though, lol, I have a new pain that seems to be in my left hip/back of pelvis. If I move a certain way it aches as if I need to crack my back, if that makes sense? Probably nothing but I'll keep an eye on it. Might be sciatica as it's like something that's trapped and needs released.

Hi Quackers - I get these pains aswell - especially when I turn over in bed, which is now a major operation and I try not to if possible! I think I've got mild SPD - hurts right on my pubic bone when walking... But I get the side pains a lot when turning over - or coughing/sneezing - I've learnt to hold myself before I do either!

Brilliant you're 12 weeks though - lovely to hear from you!

Quackers · 19/01/2004 13:30

Linnet, yes I always feel I need to crack my back at the moment, not so much a pain though!
Dot1 - how the devil are you! Good to hear from you, bet you're about to drop!!! Yep 13 weeks now!!

I'm just approaching 31!! It's been a bit of a long haul but nearly there now...!

Egypt · 21/01/2004 21:52

what is spd?
please?

Linnet · 21/01/2004 21:55

symphysis pubic disruption, I think that's what it stands for. Where the pelvic bones seperate too far. type it into google or baby centre and you will get info on it.

Moomin · 21/01/2004 22:05

Symphasis pubis dysfunction (please excuse spelling!) When you are almost ready to give birth, your pelvic ligaments and pubis bones around your pelvis loosen up. With spd this happens much too soon and causes anything from a little to a lot of discomfort. It's becoming acknowledged more and more by GPs, obs doctors and midwives and seems to be getting more common in the UK. Well, either that, or it's being properly diagnosed rather than being treated as "one of those things" you have to put up with in pregnancy. Some people think it might be down to too much oestrogen (sp) in the water.
If you do a search in the Health threads, you should see much more about it (and explained in a much better way!) There's also a national support group with a great website for more info.
As I said in my last post, I was diagnosed at 5 months and had to leave work much earlier than I was planning. Mobility became a problem although I was given mild physio and a couple of "bump supports" to help. Eventually I used crutches to help me walk. The best thing to help the pain, though, is complete rest. My spd totally cleared up when I was diagnosed with something completely different and had to spend the last 6 weeks of my pg in bed on my arse!
I'm sure someone was writing an article about it recently and posted on media requests.
Look on the bright side - it might not be this and even if it is, you may have caught it early enough to seek help and rest up so it doesn't get any worse.

Moomin · 21/01/2004 22:08

Right, proper term and correctly spelt: symphysis pubis dysfunction

Quackers · 22/01/2004 09:12

Thanks Moomin, have seen the thread you talk about. I do not think I have it to the degree you have though, but enough to be frustrating!
