Hiya
I'm 18 weeks pregnant with dc2 and have got thrush (self diagnosed but lots of experienced of it!) can I just buy pessaries and cream or do I have to go to docs?

I've always either visited my Dr or asked for a prescription on the phone, this way I don't have to pay plus I believe some people have been refused by chemists if they can see your pregnant. If you do buy it, the advice I've always been given is NOT to use the applicator when pregnant.

You might also want to get checked for gestational diabetes - itching is one of the charming side effects!

Neiffer · 05/02/2013 19:45

Ooh I didn't know you could do it over phone, will ring midwife tomorrow. Didnt realise itching was a side effect of gd...hmmm. However, tmi, its the discharge and distinctive odour unfortunately :(
Pregnancy is gross.

Do see your GP or midwife. I thought I had thrush actually and when I spoke to the MW it seems what I was experiencing was normal for pregnancy....
Someone on my ante-natal thread suggested witch hazel which has really helped with my discharge/irritation.

Do go and see someone I have had recurrant thrush throughout this pregnancy. I had some swabs done just to check as I managed to go through a whole tube of cream. Probably my worst side effect and I have pgp and had treatment for piles :( .

I sympathise as I experienced this recently, the first time I went to the pharmacy I was honest and told them I was pregnant and they wouldn't let me buy anything for it. Thought this was a bit odd and spoke to the midwives at work and they said its fine, just put the pessary in by hand rather than using the applicator. So went back to pharmacy, sucked my tummy in and in a couple of days it was all cleared up, what a relief!

Yep see your midwife or gp for a prescription. Its written in my notes which I think is good - if it happened to become a recurrent complaint the antenatal team would be able to see and check for other things.

Chemist won't sell it if they know you're pregnant, plus why pay for something you can get for free?

Cheers, I also have dreadful piles. They were awful last time too. It's just a mess from the waist down! Ill call midwife in morning and see what they think. It's a nightmare trying to get appts here and they take weeks which is rather avoid!

"It's just a mess from the waist down!" Grin

Same here, she's only in two days a week and fully booked at least a week in advance! Gp must be able to sort you out though.

DeathMetalMum · 05/02/2013 22:16

Yy to a mess from the waist down Grin. I went through the gp much easier to get hold of instantly than midwife. Think the midwife has to get the gp to issue the perscription anyway thats what they do where I am.
