Can anyone give me any tips of things you did to alleviate this?

I'm 22 weeks, have gained a kilo overall and have hardly any bump (please don't hate me, everyone else seems to for this! I mean nothing, people don't even believe I'm pregnant, so it's not an issue with carrying extra weight as such) but is it possible that he is somehow pressing on my spine!? That's how it feels anyway I get this terrible ache at the bottom of my back. Is it redistribution of weight internally...? I'm out of ideas. Have an appt at hospital tomorrow so can ask but thought I'd ask here too.

I've tried sleeping on my side (also not sleeping well), gentle exercise, stretches, hot water bottle on the back as if it's period pain. Nothing helps and it's getting me down :(

Hello! Congrats n your pregnancy.

I'm only 13 weeks, but have been suffering with a bad back as well. I actually had such severe nerve pain last week that I couldn't walk for about six hours, but even now that's passed my back is still very achy and sore.

I haven't found a total fix, but am coping with a combination of paracetamol, hot water bottles and lying with a very soft pillow behind my back which I'm sort of half lying on and which is really helping. DH and I have a beautiful, expensive firm mattress, which I'm blaming completely! My doctor also recommended buying stick on heat patches which I'm going to go and get today!

Sorry no clever tips, but I empathise! Hope it starts to lessen for you soon.

I've had awful back pain since 24 wks & am now 36 wks. Movement seems to really help (sadly this baby must have decided I shouldn't sit or lie down for too long) & often at night heat pads are the only thing that allow me to sleep

If heat doesn't work try cold packs. I sometimes have to sleep with frozen peas against my lower back. Works a treat.

Hi Babyradio,
I know exactly how you feel. I'm 24+3 weeks. I didnt really have a bump (I could see one but unless I wore really tight tops, other people didnt notice) until about 2 weeks ago then suddenly developed a bump. Now everyone is commenting on it (I went from 'no one asks!' to 'I wish they'd stop' very quickly!) My sister didnt have a bump until really far on.

My back pain has been really achy on and off. I do Pilates and my instructor explained it's because your pelvis is only supported by ligaments which overstretch in pregnancy (I think that's right!) so it's pretty common.

I found sleeping on my side really difficult to start with and it made my back worse but I've just started using a pillow to support my top leg/lean on to stop me rolling onto stomach and that's helped my back ache a lot. Sitting straight and not slouching when watching tv etc. also helps (I know it's obvious but it took me ages to discipline myself!) Other than that, just heat pads/gentle rubbing etc.

I haven't really got any specific ideas to stop it, I just thought you'd like to know your not alone!
