Oliver James is out because it will be associated with Jaimie Oliver. Otherwise it would be my pick too. Of the choices, I think Samuel James is nice. Not so keen on inlay or Hugo.

NomDePlume · 25/04/2006 15:14

Thomas Finlay

madmarchhare · 25/04/2006 15:17

This is going to sound mean, but tbh, although they are all lovely names for 'existing' kids, Im a bit bored with them all now.

bouncer · 25/04/2006 15:28

Wondered abou the initial O H, but it was ok

All perfectly acceptable in any combination - think that's the first time I've said that re one of these posts! Grin

bouncer · 25/04/2006 15:30

Wondered about the initials O H, but thought it's probably ok. The trouble with a first name beginning with a vowel is that initials often end up spelling something. Sister and dh are both D J and never had a problem!!

Really Mrs badger? Not used this much before - what have some of the names been like then? Do you have a favourite out of the 3

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 25/04/2006 15:42

hehe - am usually v polite and try not to bash others' choices - if I think all the options given are hideous I just don't post at all!

Thomas is one of my favourite names ever BUT can't ever use it myself (surname conflict!), so I like to recommend it many other people to use it as possible.
It's so versatile - walks into pub: 'Hi, I'm Tom'; 'Thomas Atkinson, MP for Flydale North'; 'Arise, Sir Thomas Wallingford'; 'Now, live on Xfm - Tom Harris with his latest single Jam Badgers!'

But James, Samuel, Finlay and Oliver tick all the same boxes - not 100% on a Hugo in a rock band, but good in every other way!.

madmarchhare · 25/04/2006 15:53

Ah, but everyone agreeing isnt everyones opinion, which is what was asked for here Grin.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2006 15:59
Grin actually the normal responses I repress run along the lines of 'My God, do you really want to label your son as a chav from birth?' and/or 'How on earth will Ellie Pinkie RooBoo feel when she's called up to receive her PhD?', which would immediately offend and/or alienate any MNers who have called their kids already and show how class-bound and intolerant I am.

No, better to spray my tea at the screen in private and stay quiet...

spidermama · 25/04/2006 16:01

Funny ... but I never feel like 'spraying' my tea at anyone's name, no matter how boring and how many million times I've heard it before.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2006 16:03
Blush am bad person.

In my defence, have only sprayed at (what I considered) way-out MN suggestions, not in-the-flesh names.

spidermama · 25/04/2006 16:17

I get annoyed about this because it's my kids people are talking about.

DH and I gathered names almost as a full time job tnhroughout the pregnancies, pouring over name books, watching credits roll on films, combing the family trees. We found it very hard to agree on names and in the end we chose names we both love. Doesn't everyone?

That's why I feel sad when people feel free to slag off unusual names and level all sorts of generalised critisms at the parents (Chavs, trying to hard, whatever) without ever having met them.

I have a very common name and I hate having a common name because I don't feel common. I feel like me.

Perhaps my kids will resent the name I've given them, but I don't think they're any more likely to resent their names than all the Chloes and Jacks out there for different reasons.

I hope people can stop passing their judgements down and infecting further generations. I'm not having a go at you mrsB but at the view you, and probably the majority of other MNers, express.

It's very personal and it hurts when people make snide comments about my kids names. It's another part of the fit-in-or-fuck-off culture which I loath.

Phew! That feels better.

schneebly · 25/04/2006 16:18

I think they are all lovely but leaning towards samuel james.

spidermama · 25/04/2006 16:20

Sorry to vent on your thread bouncer.

Of the three I'd go for Oliver Hugo.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2006 16:24

Sad sorry spidermama - I genuinely don't mean to upset people, which is why I don't normally pass comment on names.
