Gestational diabetes random low blood sugar

I had gestational diabetes in my previous pregnancy, and so am being treated as if I have it from the start this time (I'm 13 weeks). I've had no problems so far keeping my blood sugars under control by diet, but my morning ones have tended to be on the higher side (usually in the 6's, sometimes up into the 7's). This morning, randomly, I have had one of 4.9, and it's put me in a blind panic that there's something wrong with the baby. I haven't done anything unusual today, and ate what I normally eat. The only different thing that's happened is that I ate my dinner really really late last night. Could that have caused it (am thinking along the lines that my insulin levels would have been higher overnight than normal in order to deal with the late meal, and so they might have still been higher this morning too). Has anyone else had random low readings?

Hi. I wouldn't worry too much if it's low. It could be any number of reasons why it's low - but the main thing to worry about is when it goes too high, I think? That's when the baby suffers from it in the long term. So it's the better of the 2 scenarios of either low or high sugars, I guess.

I've got GD too (they picked me up for it at 26 weeks). I've known about it for about 3 weeks now so I'm monitoring my blood sugars really closely too to spot patterns. Did you do some exercise, get tired out from being busy, or maybe eat a few less carbs than normal the day before? Those can make my readings lower when I next test? Or it could just be hormonal changes or a growth spurt from the baby that day, making your body use up your energy more. It's not mega low though, and if you don't feel poorly or dizzy because of it, then it shouldn't be too bad.

Hope you feel well and don't worry too much. Maybe ask the diabetic team at the antenatal clinic, if you've got referred into that service yet.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy.

I'm not sure as this is all new to me and I have yet to receive my testing kit so just trying to follow the eating plan. But join us on the gestational diabetes thread that I have linked to. Lots of other ladies in the same position who may be able to share similar experiences.

Errrrr,....4.9 isn't low. In fact it normal and what you should be aiming for.

Or do you mean, it's just a little lower than the other readings?

Your late evening meal would have made a difference. You can rise in the morning because your body knows it hasn't eaten so your liver dumps some glucose into your system. If you ate late, this may not have happened this morning.

Good luck with the pregnancy. And I promise that that reading is nothing to worry about.
(type 1 and pregnant).

Thank you so much for your replies. Maybe - I did mean that it was lower than I was expecting rather than it was low - thank you so much for your reply - you have reassured me loads :). And my lunchtime one was back up to 6.4 which is higher than normal for that time of the day. It's amazing how sensitive it is.
