Sling/ baby carrier suitable for a newborn

Hi,

I need some advice on slings/baby carriers suitable for newborns. I plan on using one for the school run as the walkway leading to the school is really narrow and prams pushchairs often cause traffic jams going down there! Will I be ok to wear it over my coat?

Watching with interest, as in same position!

All different kinds are suitable from newborn! And yes you can wear it over a coat or if it is cols pop it on under your coat with the baby just in a sleepsuit and do your coat up over the both of you :)

A lot of people start with a stretchy wrap for a newborn- brands like kari me, moby or victoria the sling lady. Or a Close carrier which is kind of like a pre tied wrap, is adjustable and bit easier if you don't fancy wrapping.

Woven wraps will last from newborn to whenever as they are nice and sturdy. They are bit harder to get used to than a stretchy but are great.

Or a more structured carrier like a baby hawk Mei Tai is a square of fabric with straps you tie it on with. Again suitable from newborn to toddler.

Or if that all sounds very complicated you can get carriers which are full buckle so just as easy to put on as your high street carriers like baby bjorns but unlike baby bjorns are comfortable, hold the baby in optimum position and will last for years as you can wear teh baby on your front and then your back as they get older. Ergos are one such brand, boba, beco, connecta and so on. SOme are more structured than others.

If that all sounds complicated then have a google to see if there is a sling library near you where you can try them on and hire them out to see what you like best before you buy :)

Most are available per loved easily enough, the FB group Slings and things- FSOT is a very active sales board. Don't be put off by the expensive wrapping habits they all have, you will also find lots of help getting more reasonable sling there.

After lots of research, I'm going for a Joy and Joe stretchy one - same idea as all the 'brand' stretchy ones, but only £15 and get great reviews (and independent uk co). That'll get me through the first few months and then I'll go to a sling library to try out other more long-term solutions (prob a soft-structured type)

I used baby Björn carrier to start with as i wanted one my dh would use too, he refused point blank to use a wrap. It gave me awful back ache (bad posture while feeding may not have helped either). Switched to an ergo which I love and only stopped using when I fell pregnant (son was 18 months) as pp said need insert for newborns for the ergo, so debating whether or not to get it or just drag the baby bjorn one out from the loft.

Get an Ergo newborn insert eltshihT, your back will thank you and you can always sell it on.

The Close baby carrier is great for newborns but it's stretchy so an older, heavier baby can start to 'sag' down your front. I carried DS in one until he was about 8 months old but DD only lasted 5 weeks in it before she was too heavy so I then moved her into an Ergo with a newborn insert, which, to be frank, was a pain in the butt. Once she could hold her head up steadily I stopped using the insert and now love the Ergo.

Mei Tais come in lovely patterns but they have very long straps that are a bit of a pain when you're trying to put one on outside and they keep touching the ground.

Can I hijack with a quick sling question, please?

Any Ergo uses and/or c. section mums, how soon would I be able to use an Ergo (with the newborn insert, obviously) after a section? It looks like the waist strap, which takes most of the weight, would sit low, posssibly over the scar. Is that right?

youmaycallmeSSP · 02/02/2013 11:43

Yes phoebe it sits right over your hips. I would recommend a wrap or soft stretchy sling to start off with anyway.

I've got a close caboo for my 6wk old and love it, quick and easy to you and comfy, dd loves being in it and i feel secure in the knowledge i can bend and do things and she's helder tightly and safely

MrsHuxtable · 02/02/2013 22:14

I used the Connecta Carrier from 6 weeks with DD. I only stated so late because that's when I gave up with the Moby.
With my next child, I'll be using it from day1.
