Measuring 33 weeks at 28 weeks

I've just been for my 28 week midwife appointment and she has said that the baby feels nice and big but that I'm also measuring 5 weeks ahead of my dates. I've lost 1kg since booking too and I do have a high BMI. She's now told me that I probably won't be allowed to go full term and am more likely to be induced at 38 weeks.

I'm meant to be having my GTT tomorrow at 9am but due to lack of funds (Its the day before payday tomorrow and I have 70p to my name) I need to rebook this which I will be doing as soon as I can find the damn phone charger.

To be honest its really worried me this is my second baby my first was 10lb 4 so I wasn't expecting a small baby but I also went 8 days overdue so suddenly to be told I'm not going to be allowed to go fullterm is really really scary.

I don't even know why I'm posting this to be honest I guess I just need a bit of reassurance as DH is currently out at the Hospital denistry and I have no-one I can contact to cry at and tell it all to. Everything else is brilliant by the way she says my blood pressure is great my irons great I've had no concerns up until this point now I'm panicking.

So did you measure big? Were you induced? Isn't it better to let me go full term? I've been told I'll be having another growth scan at around 34 weeks.

Hey. Am 30 weeks with DC1 and also measuring big, although 'only' 4 weeks ahead. Am having a growth scan tomorrow, heard nothing of a GTT as my BMI was 27 at booking, so can't offer you any advice... Just wanted you to know you're not alone! I've put on 3 stone already so I'm hoping it's cake and not mega spawn.

Here's to (hopefully) normal sized babies and no being induced early! Grin

I haven't got any experience, but from me being a bit of worrier, my midwife has told me giving birth anywhere after 37 weeks is the 'safe' zone so you should be absolutely fine! They would consider anything before 37 weeks premature, so this is why they say that. To be honest, if your baby is ready to come out early they will, so its totally up to you if you wait or not! The only slight perk of being induced is having a better idea of when your LO will be here! Good Luck and I'm sure everything will be fine! Just try to relax :)

I was also measuring big at 28 weeks. They measured me 4 weeks ahead, so 32 weeks. I am now 33+5, have had a growth scan which showed baby was definitely not too big, in fact he was even slightly under the "normal" curve, and at my last appointment (33 weeks) I was only measuring 1 week ahead of dates.

The midwife who did my original measurement told me that the babies often have a growth spurt around this time so you may measure big for a while, but it evens itself out eventually.

Also remember that the bump measurement is a very subjective thing, it can vary a lot depending on who is doing it, and, in my experience, the way the baby is lying.

Try not to worry too much Smile

Ah gosh thank you so much I had such awful midwifery care with my DD I'm just over panicking a little at all this extra care shown! I'm just not prepared enough for this baby to be arriving 2 weeks early Grin I think I need to take all your advice and just relax at least until my next growth scan!

Hi,

Due to a high BMI I have always measured a few weeks along from where I am but as my consultant said it's not clear what's me and what that baby. For that reason and because I have gestational diabetes I had growth scans at 28, 32 and 36 weeks which showed me just over the 50th percentile. I had a sweep at 37+5 and will have another one at 38+5 if the first doesn't have an effect (not so far). Then we will discuss induction but they definitely won't allow me over 40 weeks.

So therefore I think that you should ask for growth scans. They are not 100% accurate but give more information than just measuring. I always think I probably measured 12 weeks pregnant when I conceived!

Good luck Smile

I measured 32cm at 28w with DC3. Got sent for a scan to check I didn't have polyhydramnios (which I didn't) and the growth scan part showed he was on 50th centile.

Continued to measure big for dates throughout and ended up having another scan at 36w as MW wasn't too sure if he might have been breech. He wasn't but he measured on the 97th centile instead at that scan.

I ended up being induced at 42w and he was 11lb.

I'm looking big again this time already at 26w so will be interesting to see if I'm measuring big again too. I saw a consultant earlier on in the pregnancy due to having a big baby last time and I go back at 38w to 'discuss options' which I take to mean early induction. That won't be something I'll consent to though if the only reason is for it maybe being another big baby.

Was there a reason (like GD) last time for your big baby? If not and your DC was big just because and the birth was pretty straight forward then it might not mean you need to worry about them wanting to induce you at 38w. I dont know too much about how a high BMI might be factored in with that though as maybe that alters their protocol? You've already proved you can give birth to a big baby though!

Like someone else has said though 38w is considered full term so don't worry about that side of things.

Take your scan at 34w with a slight pinch of salt too. My consultant said he doesn't do late pregnancy growths scans on big babies as they can't be reliable enough. The baby is so crammed in there that it is very difficult for the sonographers to do the measurements and have them be accurate enough.

Hope this has helped a bit :)

I had a similar experience. DC2 was 9lb 3oz and with DC3 I was measuring 4 weeks ahead. Midwife talked about BIG baby and got me really worried! Had a scan and baby was lying with its back arched outwards which was making it appear HUGE. As it was I measured at 46 at 40 weeks and baby was 8lb 15oz.
Bump can measure bigger for so many reasons, and although its hard try not to panic.
